The very first step to getting rid of head lice is to make sure that anything that has come into contact with them is dealt with systematically. You'll be surprised to know that they have a few weaknesses that will help you to get rid of them once and for all. Knowing about the head lice's life cycle is vital to ensuring success in eliminating them.

Head Lice - How to get rid of.... Important to Remember

If you have more than one child in your home, you will want to try and keep the infected child away from any non-infected children. Make sure you check all the children thouroughly to ensure that you know who needs to be treated and who does not.

You can have a look at the bottom of this lens for related lenses explaining exactly how you check for both lice as well as nits - the eggs that they lay.

Head Lice - How to get rid of.... Step #1

The first step to making sure you can get rid of them is to collect everything that your child may have come into contact with such as clothes worn, hats and scarves as well as any bedding that they have been sleeping in. Put all of these items into the wash and wash on a hot water setting.

You will want to then take the vacuum cleaner and clean around the bed as well as the matress If you have a matress protector, it would be best to wash that too.

Now take a look in the living area if there is a couch that your child may have sat on. It would be best to vacuum that too.

Any hairbrush should be cleaned in hot water with a household disinfectant.

If there are any items that cannot be put into the washing machine, like heavy jackets, then it is best to bag them in a concealed bag and leave them in the garage for no less then two weeks. The reason for this is that the lice eggs take up to ten days to hatch and the new born lice need to feed within one hour of hatching or they will die. By keeping the jackets concealed for two weeks, you can be sure that the last eggs hatched will be dead.

Head Lice - How to get rid of... Step # 2

Now if you have more than one child and only one is infected, you will want to keep them apart from each other as much as possible. If you decide to use chemical medications on your child, you won't want to use the unneccesarily on a child that is not infected.

However, if you decide to use a natural chemical free lotion that has no side effects and no adverse reactions, then you may want to treat both children at the same time to ensure success.

You will need to check both children regularly to ensure that you have not just transfered the llce from the child your are treating to the one that you hare not treating. Also remember to check yourself regularly and always wash your hands after treating any infected children.

Working to a Schedule is VITAL

It is important to work to a schedule. Taking into account how long the life cycle of lice is and what affects them in the adult as well as the egg stage will help you to combat them. There are many fantastic ways to treat head lice without using chemicals.

Important Information!!

Lesser known information:- Pediculocides are not as effective as they once where due to the fact that head lice have built up an immunity to them. In addition, it can be harmful to your children if they are treated with chemicals if they have already scratched their head enough to create open wounds.
