Obesity and Migraines: Is It Real?

Can being fat be a recurring headache cause?

Can gaining weight give you more migraines? Possibly. Some new studies have indicated that gaining weight and increasing your BMI can mean more migraines, and increasing recurrance of headache.

The worse part is the newest study on children out of Cinncinnati..91% of obese children in the study had migraines!

The American Headache Society currently states there is no correlation between obesity and headache, but being in the field, it is a topic of conversation.

Most migraineurs are female, in their 40's and obese. If you are in pain you can't exercise too well now can you?

But exercise can help..it increases the seratonin levels in your brain and seratonin is involved in migraine. More seratonin..less migraines.

Unfortunately, the 5HTP supplements do not work..apparently it does not get into the brain too well, so please don't waste your money on this one.

In addition to losing weight, regular sleep patterns (go to bed and get up same time 7 days a week!) can reduce headaches.

Also cut back on food triggers that you know are suspect..everyone is different. Some can't have red wine, others it's MSG or citrus fruit. Many cannot stand aspartame.

If your migraines occur 2-3 times a week, or are disabling once a month you many need a short course of medication to settle the brain down so to speak. Chronic migraines and other recurring headaches are really a "hyper-irritable" state of the brain.

NOTE: other things that irritate the brain besides irregular sleep: nicotine and caffeine.

Sorry! can't do the above and expect to control the headaches with pills. Lifestyle plays a huge roll in headache management.

After all, what have you got to lose but your pain?
