Sweet Dreams

Whether you want your bedroom to be traditional or modern, bright or neutral, the headboard can make a big statement. Changing your headboard can add interest to a room and make it more inviting. A DIY approach will save you money and add a personal touch to the feel of the space. Here as an example, Beaux Rêves or sweet dreams by Holley & Gill, Montreal-based designers.

Headboard Designs for Bedroom Makeovers

Unlike many rooms of the household the bedroom is a private space. With such a defined function, the bed should sit centre stage and be a focal point of the room. Changing a headboard is the quickest way to make a big impact and add character to the space. A new headboard does not have to cost the earth, and even those with little experience will find that a DIY approach is not as difficult as it first appears.

Recycled Headboards

Decorating on a budget means making the most of the materials around you. Headboards made from the right recycled materials can add a quirky edge or vintage elegance to the bedroom. Reclaimed doors can be painted and varnished or left as they are for a worn, rustic look, and make great headboards. Your bedroom should be a space for expression, so consider a headboard that matches a hobby or interest. Surf boards, for example, put a personal stamp on the bedroom. Antique mirrors, used as headboards, add detail and can create the illusion of a larger, lighter space. Reclaimed vintage commercial signs, once given a little attention, can make for powerful focal points. In children's bedrooms, use your imagination. White painted picket fencing, or wire canopies draped with colourful fabrics, can liven up a dull space.

Natural Materials

In modern interiors, especially those heavily featuring monochrome, metals and sharp edges, a 'natural' headboard can soften the bedroom. Consider a piece of unshaped hardwood for a rustic finish. Eco-friendly designers might opt for more sustainable materials, such as bamboo. Bamboo is highly versatile; headboards can be made from tying bamboo poles together with twine, rope or fabric, or else poles can be cut to equal lengths and fitted within a wooden frame. All of the necessary materials are available at DIY stores and the tools can be found online at Tool-NET. Making a wooden frame might require more advanced skills (ensuring accurate right angles and tight joining), but these are not beyond the scope of the average DIY-er. Be sure to practise caution if making use of a nail gun or drill, and only paint, varnish, sand or glue in a well ventilated area.

Headboard Covers

If you want to keep your existing headboard but change the theme of the room, make a slip-over cover. Sewing fabric into a carefully measured case means it can be placed over the top of the headboard for a temporary change. This is also ideal for easy cleaning, and means that the headboard can match the rest of the linen and accessories as they change.

Headboards with Impact

For the more adventurous designer, bold headboards with innovative features can dominate the interior. Floor to ceiling headboards, for example, add a striking focal point to the bedroom. Alternatively, installing backlighting, lamps, or additional storage balances function and style. Get creative and add a personal touch to your room.
