Playing Heads Up Seven Up

Of the many games I played in my childhood I remember playing this game. It was always my favorite game to play at school or Sunday school.

It was a fun cooperative game that kept us guessing. This is a game where children actually want to be "IT". (chosen)

It is a game that can be used to teach children to work together, asking questions and with deductive reasoning decide whom it was that was chosen.

As a parent I now see that most teachers used this little game as a way to pass time or gradually take us into another activity.

How to Play

Heads Up Seven Up

  1. Everyone puts their heads down with eyes closed and one thumb up.
  2. The Teacher or parent chooses a person as 'It'. That person goes around and touches 6 people. Once done they all go to the front of the room.
  3. Everyone yells 'Heads Up Seven Up' and all the children raise their heads and try to guess which of the 7 children was 'It'. [the person the teacher chose.]
  4. If someone guesses then that person gets to be 'It'. Everyone sits down, puts their head down and raises one thumb.
  5. Now the person who is 'it' chooses 6 children only this time he taps 5 on the thumb and only 1 thumb is put down.
  6. Again as the children are being chosen they go up to the front of the room until all are up there. They all yell 'Heads Up Seven Up' and everyone raises their head.
  7. The class guesses again and the game is played again.

I loved this game in elementary school, but we played it differently. As I remember, the teacher chose the first 7 people to go up to the front of the class. The others put their heads down, and the 7 "it" kids each went and touched one kid. If a kid was tapped, they would put their thumb up and continue keeping their head down. The taggers go back to the front and say "Heads up 7 up." The seven people who were tapped stand up, and they each get one chance to guess who touched them. If they were wrong, they sit back down for the next round. If they guess correctly, they trade places with the person who tapped them. Thanks for this nostalgic lens. :)

I remember playing this game every Wednesday at youth group. We would place the cards on our head and ask each other clues to try and figure out what our card said.
It got really loud and I just remember having lots of fun and laughing.
For some reason I wasn't so good at this game and would inevitably be the last one try to guess my card.
