Herbs and Herbal Supplements

Herbs and herbal supplements, you use them everyday, yet are sometimes almost unaware that you are. They are the dandelion that grows wild in the backyard, the powdered ginger and garlic that sit in your kitchen cupboard waiting to be used as flavorings in your next meal. They are in the boxes of herb tea that line a little shelf in your kitchen and the Aloe Vera hand lotion that sits in your bathroom cupboard. All these products are indeed herbs or herbal supplements.

Herbs and herbal supplements have become so common in our lives today that we may not even notice when we use them. But they are there and we are acquiring their health benefits everytime we drink them in a nice relaxing cup of tea, consume them within our evening meal, or when we apply a salve or lotion to a cut or burn that contains them.

What Is A Herb?

The debate still rages as to the exact definition of a herb. It has long been debated that woody plants and those not grown from seeds should fall under the heading of spices, while plants grown from seed, or that have medicinal or other useful properties should be classes as an herb.

It is for this reason that the different plant groups of herb, spice, flower and vegetable tend to overlap each other very closely. Chicory and rhubarb are vegetables that are often classed as a herb, while bay, sage and ginger are spices that tend to also fall under the heading of herbs.

Loosely termed, a herb can be any plant which offers useful properties, can act as a medicine, dye, insect repellent or anti-bacterial aide.
