Health Benefits of Gardening

This lens is dedicated to sharing information about all the great health benefits of gardening.  Don't believe me?  Read the modules below for fantastic explanations of the health effects from gardening.

Losing Weight with Gardening

People try all sort of things to lose weight. Eating right and exercising is good, but sometimes it is not enough, and humans often take desperate measures to reach a weight they feel comfortable with. Thankfully, there is an easy and productive way to burn off massive amounts of calories without even feeling like you are doing work, and that is through the act of gardening.

All the activities you do with gardening enable you to lose weight. In fact, you should design your garden so you can do as much work as possible. For example, half an hour of just planting seeds will burn one-hundred seventy calories. When you combine that with all the other activities you do when gardening, you can burn almost a quarter pound of pure fat pure day by gardening. As if that were not enough, you get a bunch of great food from your efforts. When you work out, your work does not truly go into anything productive (except helping yourself, of course), but gardening results in tangible benefits.

The Benefits of Homegrown Food

There are many benefits to growing your own food. As mentioned in the above module, you can lose a lot of weight and get tons of exercise just by participating in the act of gardening. But the benefits go far beyond that. For one, you can save money by growing your own fruits and vegetables, and that is something that everyone is interested. After a few crop cycles, you could save upwards of hundreds of dollars, depending on how many cycles you are calculating and how much your consumption and yields are. This is just one of several advantages of gardening. Also, by participating in compost gardening, you can save money on fertilizer as well.

The food that you grow yourself is often healthier than what you find in stores, especially because it is organic. What you grow has a personal touch that you cannot find anywhere else, and since you have complete control, you can ensure that the quality is stellar and unmatched by any supermarket chain.
