There are a number of items that you should have on hand in your home in order to help you keep yourself, your family, and even your pets prepared for an emergency. The items that we offer below are readily available on eBay and we encourage you to take a look.

Disasters happen when you least expect them. Our goal here is to make you aware and help you get prepared. Please take these suggestions seriously. They could mean the difference between life and death.

Don't Underestimate the Importance of Emergency Preparedness

Hurricane season is upon us. The most important thing you can do is be informed and be prepared.

These tips for hurricane preparedness apply to other disasters as well, tornadoes, fires, even terrorist attacks, so read them and heed the good advice.

According to the National Hurricane Center, the most important things you can do for hurricane season are to be informed and be prepared. Part of being prepared involves creating a disaster supply kit. You can find pre-assembled disaster survival kits on eBay, which we recommend. You can also find weather radios, and a battery-powered or crank-powered weather radio is essential to help keep you informed.

Whether you purchase premade survival kits or make your own, make sure you include everything on the following list, provided by the National Hurricane Center:

Water - at least 1 gallon daily per person for 3 to 7 days

Food - at least enough for 3 to 7 days
- non-perishable packaged or canned food / juices
- foods for infants or the elderly
- snack foods
- non-electric can opener
- cooking tools / fuel
- paper plates / plastic utensils

Blankets / Pillows, etc.

Clothing - seasonal / rain gear/ sturdy shoes

First Aid Kit / Medicines / Prescription Drugs

Special Items - for babies and the elderly

Toiletries / Hygiene items / Moisture wipes

Flashlight / Batteries

Radio - Battery operated and NOAA weather radio

Telephones - Fully charged cell phone with extra battery and a traditional (not cordless) telephone set

Cash (with some small bills) and Credit Cards - Banks and ATMs may not be available for extended periods

Keys

Toys, Books and Games

Important documents - in a waterproof container or watertight resealable plastic bag
- insurance, medical records, bank account numbers, Social Security card, etc.

Tools - keep a set with you during the storm

Vehicle fuel tanks filled

Pet care items
- proper identification / immunization records / medications
- ample supply of food and water
- a carrier or cage
- muzzle and leash

Survival Trivia: Hurricane Names for 2008

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1st to the end of November.

Hurricanes have been referred to by names since 1953 with six lists of names currently being designated by the National Hurricane Center. When a particularly memorable hurricane occurs, its name is retired and replaced by another. Thus when the list used in 2005 comes around again, Katrina's name will have been eliminated.

Originally, only female names were used. Since 1979, male names have been included and the names on each list alternate between male and female. In 2008, the first name is that of a male. (Last year's list started with a female name.)

Susan -- this is a real need in our home. While we may have all the necessary STUFF, it's not organized since we have been doing our home renovation project. Hopefully we will be better prepared for disasters soon. Great information!
