Raising a Healthier Generation

The mission of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation is to eliminate childhood obesity and to inspire all young people in the United States to develop lifelong, healthy habits.

The goals of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation are two-fold

1. To stop the nationwide increase in childhood obesity by 2010.

2. To empower kids nationwide to make healthy lifestyle choices.

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation works to by positively affect change by targeting the places that can make a difference to a child's health, in their homes, schools, restaurants, doctor's offices, and the community.

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation is a partnership between the American Heart Association and the William J. Clinton Foundation, both non-profit organizations. As a department of both of these non-profit organizations, the Alliance for a Healthier Generations utilizes the non-profit status of the two partner organizations.

    For the first time in American history, our current generation of children could live shorter lives than their parents.

    The cause is obesity, defined simply as too much body fat, which can lead to heart disease, diabetes and other illnesses.

Alarming Trends With Our Children

Will our children's lifespan be less than ours?

We are looking at a generation of children who could become the first generation in modern history whose lifespan is less than that of their parents.
  1. An estimated 15% of children and adolescents ages 6 to 19 are currently overweight.
  2. Estimates are between 40 - 80 percent of overweight children will become overweight adults.
  3. If current trends continue, one of three American children born in 2000, will suffer type 2 diabetes during his or her lifetime.
  4. For Children from ethnic/racially diverse populations half will suffer type 2 diabetes during his or her lifetime.
  5. Recent statics indicate that 3 out of 4 Americans will be obese by 2015.
  6. Children who have an overweight parent are 80% more likely to become overweight themselves.

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation
The Alliance for a Healthier Generation is a partnership between the American Heart Association and the William J. Clinton Foundation. Along with our co-leader Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger of California, the Alliance will work nationally to create awareness and real solutions for the childhood obesity epidemic.
Go Healthy Challenge
The Go Healthy Challenge is an on-air, online and community-based movement that empowers kids to take the lead in making their lives, schools and communities healthier.
The Alliance for a Healthier Generation Healthy Schools Program
The Alliance for a Healthier Generation Healthy Schools Program provides real tools and solutions for schools to become healthier places for students and teachers, without creating budget problems. The Healthy Schools Program is a great way for schools to get the help they need to become healthier places for staff and students.
Engaging the Healthcare System
The American Heart Association and other organizations have materials designed for healthcare professionals to help them identify and prevent childhood obesity. The Alliance is also collaborating with healthcare experts to facilitate better solutions for providers and the healthcare delivery system in addressing the obesity epidemic.

    Ensuring the health and well-being of our children is my top priority. Prevention of this unhealthy epidemic [of childhood obesity] is crucial to improving the welfare of all our young people.

    Thank you for compiling such an important resource for parents! We try to eat healthy foods, but there is always room for improvement. Both of my children are very active, but also love their TV shows. Come visit my 2 lenses when you have the chance!
