Healthy Can Be Fun: Get Active!
Ranked #13,109 in Sports & Recreation, #315,237 overall
How to get active and live a healthier life
I've tried "diets" and "exercise." I even did Weight Watchers for a while (a great program! If you can keep it up, then go for it!), lost a lot of weight, and then gained it all back and then some. We've all had our successes and failures in the world of health. It wasn't until I discovered a series of things that may seem like common sense but didn't fully register that I began to lose weight without completely disrupting my lifestyle. I'm now down 30 pounds, up some muscle, full of energy and ready for more!
The point of this lens is to help guide you on a journey to a happier, healthier you. I hope it motivates you to become more active and live a healthier lifestyle. Please leave a comment when you finish reading and good luck on your journey!

Inspiration is key
To get started, ask yourself what inspires you. What are your goals? What do you want to achieve? What do you want to be able to do? Visit my lens "Healthy Can Be Fun: Inspiring Yourself" for more about discovering your goals. Here are some of the things I'm working on that inspire me to keep going:
- Being extremely flexible
- Having more energy
- Feeling better about the way I look
- Reducing my risk for weight-related diseases
- Feeling stronger, inside and out
- Reaching a healthy weight and maintaining it
- Being an example to my future children
- Being able to try new things, like scuba diving and hiking
- Proving to myself that I can do it
Clearly defined goals will help you succeed
The next step
For example, becoming incredibly flexible has always been a dream of mine, but it seemed too difficult to reach for. In reality, however, all I have to do to get more flexible is be active on a regular basis and make sure I stretch at least once a day. When I wake up in the morning, I do a short session of yoga and stretch for about 15 minutes. Easy!
Many of my goals will be accomplished by simply getting more active in general, such as "having more energy," "feeling better about the way I look," "reaching a healthy weight and maintaining it," and the list goes on. Ask yourself what you can start doing to make your goals a reality.

The requirements
- I enjoy the activity
- I can fit the activity into my schedule
- I am capable of doing the activity without risking my health or putting myself in danger
My favorite workout
Check out this workout DVD from my favorite trainer, Jillian Michaels
Jillian Michaels - 30 Day Shred
Amazon Price: $6.58 (as of 06/01/2012)![]()
This is my favorite workout DVD. Why? Several reasons. For one, I enjoy doing it. That's incredibly important! If you don't enjoy your workout, you're less likely to come back and do it again. The whole point in getting active is to -stay- active and make a change for the better.
The second reason is that you get an hour long workout in 20 minutes. For those of you who have seen The Biggest Loser, you know that Jillian means business. When she trains you in this video, she has you working multiple muscle groups at the same time in order to burn more calories and build more muscle in a shorter amount of time.

Be strong
Sounds crazy, right? Who loves to do push ups? I stumbled upon a website called HundredPushups.com and thought to myself "wouldn't it be neat if I could show off with something like that." Of course that's not the kind of thought I'm proud of, but it was enough to get me to try it! Not to mention, if you can do 100 push ups you certainly deserve to show it off. That day I got down on the ground and did 6 slow and wobbly push ups. They were difficult at first and I wasn't sure I liked it. But I kept going with the thought of showing off to my friends and family as my motivation.
After a while, I began to notice a difference in my arms. I felt stronger and could feel more muscle in my arm, and when I did push ups it felt really good! It was like an adrenaline rush that hadn't been there before. And I never would have discovered that I loved push ups so much had I not given it a chance in the first place.

One hundred push ups
Join me on my quest to reach 100 push ups. I started out barely able to do 6. As of April 5th, 2010, I can do 30 strong push ups in good form without stopping, and do approximately 90 push ups in one day! Go on, give it a try. What have you got to lose? Give it a try
Another activity that surprised me was jogging. I've always hated to run. I felt that my body was not built for running and that I was better off walking longer distances for longer periods of time to burn more calories. However, one day I read about a new sport (or at least, I consider it to be a sport) on my campus: Humans vs. Zombies.
That certainly sparked my attention. I joined in for the first beta game and have been playing ever since. If you're interested in learning more about HvZ, click here. All you really need to know is that it involves a lot of running around; both sprinting and paced running. At first it was difficult, but worth it for such a fun game. After a while my body got used to running all the time and I learned to pace myself. My body seemed to get the hang of running and it felt like for the first time in my life, my body had figured out how to run properly.
If "my body was not built for running" or "I always feel awkward when I try to run" is anything like how you feel about running/jogging, I encourage you to find a running program on google that has you jogging 3 times a week and give it a try for at least 2 weeks. You may be surprised how you feel about running if you just give it a chance.

- Now this is just the sort of lens I like. No, it is not about dieting, but doing the activities you discuss here will help people either lose weight (in conjuction with calorie control) or maintain weight.
I like the personal feel to this lens. Thank you for submitting it to the Weight Loss Group and I am pleased to say the lens has now been approved.
