How to Choose A Healthy Weight Loss Plan 

With all the strange fad diets being promoted, have you ever wondered if healthy weight loss is even possible? Most diets really aren't healthy because they aren't balanced and they aren't nutritionally complete.

Sure, you might lose some weight at first but, as soon as you go off the plan, you'll gain all that weight back and then some. I've been that route many times and each time I was more tired, moody and irritable than the time before.

Also, I didn't realize it but I was putting my health in danger. It would have been better to stay overweight than to go on some of these weight loss plans. Here's a brief rundown of three of the top weight loss plans and why they might not be as healthy for you as you think.

So how do you know if your weight loss plan is healthy?

What To Look for In A Healthy Weight Loss Plan 

1. Is it nutritionally complete? Does it plan for eating foods from all food groups?

2. Does it encourage eating food that are high in nutrients, fiber and antioxidants?

3. Are you encouraged to drink water?

4. Are you shown a livable change that you can incorporate into your daily lifestyle?

5. Are you told what nutrients to add to your eating plan if it's lacking in foods from one or more food groups?

6. Are you encouraged to keep a diary so you can monitor your progress and how you feel on that eating plan.

The Atkins Diet 

The Meltdown

I once recommended a neighbor who was morbidly obese go on the Atkins Diet when it first came out. I was on it and seeing some results. But not like him.

He literally melted before my eyes. I've never seen anyone drop weight so fast. But then his mother got scared because of his sudden weight loss and insisted that he stop. Maybe that was a good thing.

The Atkins diet emphasizes going into ketosis in order to shed unwanted fat. Ketosis is a state where your body burns fat for energy instead of carbohydrates.

Doctors and researchers don't believe that it's healthy for you to stay in ketosis. They also believe that this high protein diet can damage your kidneys, especially in the first phase where you eat protein almost exclusively for 2 weeks to jump start the diet.

Also the diet restricts the starches, fruits and vegetables you eat, especially in the early stages. So, you don't get complete nutrition at that time.

With the Atkins diet you can eat all the protein and fat you want, as long as you stay away from the carbohydrates. Although they don't encourage over eating, especially fats, with this diet you won't go hungry.

When Dr Robert Atkins, creator of the Atkins diet died in April of 2003 from a head injury sustained when he fell, controversy broke out because it was believed that he died of a heart attack from being on his own diet. The coroner's report confirmed the head injury led to his death.

The South Beach Diet 

With a name that sexy, I wanted to go on the diet and I didn't even know where South Beach was. After looking at the diet, I'm glad I didn't.

What I don't like is that it starts off like the Atkins diet with an induction phase of high protein intake that doctors believe could hurt your kidneys. Then you gradually add more vegetables and limited fruits back into the diet.

The South Beach diet does encourage the intake of healthy fats and it limits carbohydrates by looking at how much sugar is in the carbohydrate (the glycemic index). Carbohydrates with low sugar content that don't make the blood sugar rise and fall to quickly are good on this eating plan.

Still, it limits grains and starchy fruits and vegetables you can eat. In the end, the South Beach Diet looks very similar to Phase 4 of the Atkins Diet, the Lifetime Maintenance Phase. The major difference here is the types and amounts of fats and carbohydrates you can eat.

Sugar Busters Diet 

If I hadn't found my answer elsewhere I probably would have ended up on this diet. Although some sugars provide essential nutrients, white sugar just isn't one of them. That a big no-no!

They don't count calories or carbs, but there is a list of what you can and can't eat on this diet. (Isn't that always the case) However, as long as you moderate your portions and cut out all refined sugar, you've got the major points of this diet covered.

What you hve to watch out for in this diet is the health claims, like controlling type 2 diabetes with this diet. Doctors and researchers warn against them.

The Lemonade Diet 

Of all the fad diets out right now, the Lemonade Diet, also known as the Master's Cleanse is the most popular. With this diet you drink a mixture of lemon juice and maple syurp 10 times a day for 10 days. This is supposidly a detox and not a diet. It is said to clean your intestinal walls and reboot your metabolism.

Because of the highly resticted nutrition on this plan and the small amount of calories, this is not a healthy plan to be on. Not many people can go for more than a few days of drinking the concoction. Because of the reduced caloric intake, you could also put your body into a state where it thinks it's starving. It will then hold onto the fat and burn your lean muscles and organs for energy.

Going on this plan for more than a few days will also leave you in a nutritional deficit.
