These days there are new fad diets announced every day. They get celebrity endorsements, news coverage, and more publicity than we can stand. Many of these diets are temporary starvation diets that result in up and down weight, loss and gain, over and over again. Others are even more dangerous. On this page, I'll do my best to tell you about or provide links to solid, science-based information about eating healthy and losing weight the right way.

What if reading a book could help you lose weight?

Researchers say it's true!

Researchers at Duke University have conducted a study in which they gave the book Lake Rescue to one group of overweight girls, another book to a second group, and the third group did not read any book. The girls who read Lake Rescue by Annie Bryant, lost an average of .71 points on the BMI index which was a statistically significant increase over the other two groups! Lake Rescue features an overweight heroine who learns to make healthy food choices in the book. The researchers say its a way to sneak in some information about healthy food without seeming to preach to the overweight teens.

Tilapia - Bad Fish

Tilapia worse than bacon for your heart?

According to a new study from researchers at Wake Forest University Baptist medical Center (Chilton, 2008), analysis of Tilapia, a popular and inexpensive fish at most grocery stores, shows that it is extremely low in beneficial Omega 3 fatty acids, but very high in harmful Omega 6 fatty acids. Tilapia can be an unhealthy choice for heart health, asthma, or any condition associated with an exaggerated inflammatory response. Tilapia should not be considered as a serving of beneficial fish fo rthose trying to eat fish to promote good cardiovascular health. The researchers even went so far as to suggest that Tilapia is worse for your heart than a hamburger or bacon. Stick with trout or salmon for high Omega 3 content.Tilapia - Bad Fish!

Mediterranean Diet

I choose most of the books listed below because they are based on the Mediterranean Diet. There are dozens of studies showing beneficial health effects from eating high vegetable, low meat content meals like those from the mediterranean diet on a regular basis. Better heart health, lower cholesterol, lower chances of contracting diabetes, beneficial weight loss, and many more have been shown to be associated with following a diet like the Mediterranean Diet. Next time you buy a cookbook, make it one like those below that are going to do more than cause your weight to yo-yo up and down.
