Do You Take Your Healthy Eyes For Granted?

Most people take all of their senses for granted.

Sight-Smell-Touch-Hearing-Taste

However,if you are lucky enough to have good healthy eyes, taking proper care of them is an absolute must if you want clear healthy sparkling eyes with good vision for as long as possible.

Are Your Eyelids Stuck Together?

Many people suffer from dry eyes in varying degrees of severity.

The symptoms can range from occasional and mild inconvenience to waking up to the eyelids stuck together and even adhering to the eye surface with acute discomfort lasting all day.In order to determine possible causes and treatment it is necessary to have an understanding of how the surface of the eyes function.

Eyes are dependent upon tears to keep them constantly moist and lubricated to maintain comfort and vision.

Tears consist of water to keep the eye surface moist, oils for essential lubrication, mucus to allow the tears to spread evenly over the surface and antibodies together with certain proteins that resist and fight infection.

Glands around the eye secrete these complex tears and if there is a dysfunction then the symptoms of dry eyes will appear.

Probably the most confusing symptom is the occurrence of excessively watery eyes when tears pour down the cheeks.

In this case the tears will consist almost entirely of water and lacking the necessary components to lubricate the eye surface.

It seems a contradiction but excessive tears are a symptom of dry eyes and are a result of a distress signal sent by the eyes to the nervous system that they are not obtaining sufficient lubrication.

All these excessive tears are capable of is washing away some wastes from the eye surrounds and without the oils and mucus they do not coat and moisturize the eye effectively.

Apart from excessive watering, other symptoms of dry eyes are pain, in and around the eyes, a sensitivity to light, grittiness in the eye, itching, redness, or blurry vision.

Causes of dry eyes

  • sensitivity

  • air conditioning or other dry air environments

  • hay fever and other allergies

  • natural aging processes

  • menopause

  • side effects from certain medications

  • a number of diseases and problems with the structure of the eyes.

A severe dry eye reaction in the eyes is one of the symptoms of Sjogren's syndrome and is mostly accompanied by an excessively dry mouth.

It is a difficult disease to diagnose correctly despite a reasonably high incidence of varying intensity among adults.

Although there is no cure, relief through regular medication is obtainable.

Dry eye syndrome cannot be cured but artificial teardrops and lubricating ointments can relieve the symptoms but it is important to keep to regular applications even if your eyes feel fine.

Eyes can dry out when you sleep so remember to apply a lubricant at bedtime.

Other treatments include the temporary or permanent blocking of the ducts that drain the eyes and, surgery, and prescription medications as advised by your eye specialist.

If you find that the discomfort from sticky eyelids on waking and excessive tears is increasing accompanied by a dry mouth then be persistent with your medical adviser, ask for a referral to a specialist.

You might be suffering from early stage Sjogren's syndrome and as we have already mentioned it is difficult to diagnose.

A Paranormal Event or Just a Floater?

If you think you are seeing something moving, just a shadow and almost imperceptible, you probably don't have poltergeist. You may, however, have floaters. Floaters are those little dark specs that you see in the background intermittently. They may form to one side and move as you move your eye to see them, so you never get a good look. Here they are, now they aren't until you start to believe that you may be crazy.

When you see floaters in your eye you are merely seeing an eclipse of the outside light. The bits of cell material clump together and block the light, throwing a show on the visual receptor and photosensitive retina. People with floaters learn to live with them once they find out that they are not harmful.

Most of the time floaters are harmless. If they occur frequently and block vision while driving or functioning on a job that requires your complete focus, that is another case altogether. They tend to come naturally with age. They are congealed cells of the vitreous material in the eye and if there is a sudden onset of new floaters, particularly those in the upper register of age, concern should be taken.

Floaters can also come from small vessels in the eye leaking and creating miniscule clumps. Many people report developing floaters after taking up weightlifting. They also have found links to floaters and chronic use of the computer. Could it be that floaters are caused by tension in the upper body?

Even though floaters themselves are not dangerous, but uncomfortable, it is always best to get them checked out by an ophthalmologist. Your floater could be more than just a simple cell mass. There is a potential that it might be a foreign body in the eye or the onset of an eye disease. Floaters have also been linked to glaucoma so a visit to the ophthalmologist should be on your list for preventive medicine.

You may also experience a lightening flash in your eyes. These flashes are similar to those that you see when you receive a blow to the head. They could be the forewarning that you have a detached retina or vascular disorder.

Your vision is too important to take any chances. If you notice an abundance of new floaters, have narrowing side vision or begin a series of lightening bolts in your line of vision, it is wise to get it checked out. I may be nothing, and sometimes knowing that is worth the trip.
