Thinking To Go For Holiday? Plan A Healthy Holiday
Preparing for a holiday gets you in a light-hearted mood and the anticipation of having a good time is all part of the experience! As more people take to the air on business or holidays, it is unfortunate that for some, the first port of call on landing is the Doctor.
People often become stressed very easily while preparing for traveling, long waits at the airport, customs and baggage handling. Although in-flight medical emergencies are not common, around one in every 20,000 passengers does suffer something serious - heart and lung problems account for 25 percent of these problem.
Causes Of In-Flight Problem

- Dehydration
- Immobility
- Reduction oxygen availability

The amount of oxygen available within the cabin may be slightly less than normal air. Therefore, people who suffer from heart or lung problems may find that this triggers their systems. People with angina may find their experience angina chest pains because the heart isn't getting enough oxygen or those with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease may find their breathing a little harder.
Minor Medical Problems
Although not life-threatening, they can certainly spoil the beginning or the end of a holiday.
Pressure: At aircraft cabin pressure air in the body cavities expand, which results in severe pain. Favorite places for this to happen are the ears, sinuses and teeth (if tooth decay has caused erosion).
Air quality: Generally, the air quality in a plane is not as good as the air outside and the air filters are not always fully effective. This allow bacteria and viruses to spread very easily from one person to another, which is why many people come home from vacation with cough or a cold.

Dehydration: Due to the air in the aircraft is not humidified, this contribute to the body becoming dehydrated. This also causes the protective mucosa of the mouth and nose, which normally act as a barrier to bacteria and viruses to dry out and increases susceptibility to infection.
Permanent damage: Traveling by plane when you have a cold can cause permanent ear or sinus damage. Ideally, you should wait until your condition improves, especially if you have a high fever or ear/sinus pain. Consult your doctor whether it is safe for you to travel, where he may be able to prescribe antibiotics or decongestants.
Preventing Problems
Plan and be prepared: Allow plenty of time to get to and through the airport because things do go wrong. Make use of luggage trolleys and if you are having difficulty, ask for help from the airport staff. It is better to share a load than to end up with strained muscles.Drink plenty of water: During the flight, drink one or two glasses of water hourly.
Avoid alcohol and caffeinated: It is best to avoid alcohol and caffeinated drink during the flight since they contribute to dehydration. Too much coffee or alcohol can cause an irregular heart rhythm or palpitations to develop, especially if this has happened before.

Equalize the pressure: During the flight, particularly whilst taking off and landing, such sweets, swallow or hold your nose and try blow out. This will equalize the pressure and help avoid ear and sinus pain.
Have medicines with you: Carry any medicines that you need with you in your hand luggage.
Keep a list of illnesses/medicines: In case you need assistance, those helping you are aware of your situation.
