Zevia - A Healthy Pop Alternative

Ranked #3,016 in Food & Cooking, #58,893 overall

What is Zevia?

Zevia is the first all natural zero calorie soda. They create their sodas with pure ingredients without adding chemically processed sugar/sugar substitutes, artificial flavors or artificial colors.

Some of the ingredients that can be found in a Zevia soda are:

1. Stevia - Stevia is a natural herb native to South and Central America. For centuries, native Americans of Paraguay and Brazil called it "sweet leaf" and used it to sweeten native foods. Stevia is used as a food additive in China, Japan, all of South America and in the United States. The extract from the stevia leaf has no calories, no effect on blood sugar levels, and is hundreds of times sweeter than sugar. Stevia sweetens all seven Zevia® Natural Diet Soda flavors.

2. Erythritol - Erythritol is a natural sugar alcohol found in fruits and vegetables, has no calories, and has no effect on blood sugar levels. Erythritol does not promote tooth decay. Erythritol is used in all seven Zevia® Natural Diet Soda flavors.

3. Natural Caramel - Zevia® Natural Cola and Zevia® Natural Ginger Ale stevia sodas are colored with natural caramel.

4. Natural Tartaric Acid - Tartaric acid occurs naturally in many plants, particularly grapes, bananas, and tamarinds, and is also found in wine. Most colas use cheap, harmful phosphoric acid for flavor. Phosphoric acid is used in fertilizers and detergents. It erodes tooth enamel and has been linked to depletion of calcium, a contributing factor in osteoporosis. Safe, natural tartaric acid enhances the zesty, tangy flavor of Zevia® Natural Cola stevia soda.

5. Citric Acid - Citric acid is naturally concentrated in oranges, grapefruit, pineapple, lemons and limes. This natural citric acid flavors all seven Zevia® Natural Diet Soda flavors.

6. Kola Nut Extract - The kola nut is from a tree native to Central and Western Africa. The kola nut contains naturally occurring caffeine, as well as theobromine, a stimulating ingredient also found in chocolate and green tea. Natural kola nut extract provides the classic cola flavor in Zevia® Natural Cola stevia soda.

7. Natural Caffeine - Most diet sodas use artificially produced caffeine. The natural caffeine in Zevia® Natural Cola stevia soda comes from coffee, tea, and the kola nut. All five other delicious Zevia® Natural Diet Soda flavors are caffeine free.

8. Ginger Root - Zevia® Natural Root Beer and Zevia® Natural Ginger Ale stevia sodas contain extract of ginger root. This ancient and tasty ingredient has been used by people around the world to alleviate everything from morning sickness to arthritis pain.

9. Annatto - Zevia® Natural Orange stevia soda is colored with annatto, from the achiote tree. When we were developing Zevia® Natural Orange, we were told that orange color had to be artificial. But, because Zevia® was to be the first truly all natural zero calorie soda, we refused to accept anything artificial for the Zevia® brand. After searching, we found annatto, which is all natural and a beautiful orange.
Due to Annatto food allergies, Zevia has discontinued using it to color their orange flavored soda. It has the same great taste, but is now clear.

NEW ZEVIA FLAVORS! March 2012

Zevia has finally introduced 3 new flavors. Lime Cola, Cherry Cola and Strawberry. I'm especially excited about the Cherry Cola. I'm a huge fan of Cherry Coke so it will be nice to have this new alternative. :)

My Personal Experiences with Zevia

I discovered Zevia at my local grocery store one day. I had recently given up pop for weight-loss and general health reasons and decided to give this a try. I was already familiar with Stevia and was excited to see it being used to sweeten pops. I've only seen and purchased Stevia sold by itself.

I have only tried the flavors twist (similar to Sprite or Sierra Mist) and cola (similar to Coca Cola or Pepsi) so far. Both are delicious and I buy them on a regular basis. I don't drink them everyday, and on the days that I do I never have more than one. I don't think Zevia should be used as an alternative for heavy pop consumption, but as a substitution for a treat on those days that you do want a pop but don't want to put your health in danger. It's not dangerous to drink more than one a day, but it would be quite expensive and you should strive to drink mostly water during the day. I like to enjoy my can of Zevia with dinner.

Update 11/27/10: I've tried the orange Zevia now. It is very delicious. I am hoping to try black cherry next.

Update 11/29/10: Just tried the black cherry last night. I was very surprised when I opened it and it was clear. Zevia only uses natural coloring, so I figure they couldn't find one for red. I was also surprised because I thought it was going to be like cherry Coke (this needs to be made, hint hint). The black cherry had great flavor and is now my fiance's favorite pop.

Update 3/14/2011: We just purchased a 6 pack of the Dr. Zevia. This soda is supposed to be like Dr. Pepper. I've never been a Dr. Pepper fan, so I probably won't be drinking anymore of it. Dan enjoys Dr. Pepper, and now enjoys the Zevia version.

Update 6/26/2011: I just had the privilege of trying the new Mountain Zevia today. Mountain Dew taste without the bad stuff, I love it! It was a nice pick me up since I was feeling a little groggy today. Mountain Zevia has natural caffeine, not that synthetic stuff. Oh, and Dan liked it, too! :)

Update 1/28/2011: I picked up a 6 pack of caffeine free Zevia cola last night. Didn't notice any difference in taste in comparison to their cola with caffeine. Was happy to be able to have a cola at night time. We also picked up a 6 pack of the grapefruit citrus. It's our new replacement for Ruby Red Squirt. Very delicious. :)

LOOK! I'm Famous!!

Ok, I'm not famous.. but it's about as close to famous as I'm going to get. Zevia loved my Mountain Zevia testimony so they featured ME on their site! You can check it out for yourself on the page here.

Where Can I Purchase Zevia?

Can't wait for it to be available in stores?
