The Pleasure Of A Raw Food Diet

Hello everyone. Eating Raw Live Foods has improved my life by giving me more energy, a more positive outlook on life and a leaner and fitter body. I am now able to live my life to the fullest!

Not only that, but I am helping to keep the planet greener by using less electricity and by being able to compost all of our household food scraps.

YOU TOO CAN HELP SAVE THE PLANET!

Just imagine what eating Raw Whole Foods can do for your life too! Have you ever wanted to lose weight? Gain more energy? Become happier with both your view of yourself and your outlook on the world?
Have you ever wanted to help the planet Earth? Now is the time to do all of those things that you may have been putting off. Now is the time to go RAW!

My daily eating routine is never the same each day but consists mainly of Fruit, Green Smoothies (which are different each time), Chocolate (Cacao) Smoothies,
Superfood Smoothies (Goji Berries, Spirulina, Blueberries, Chia Seeds, Dates, Bananas, Cacao Nibs, Mesquite, etc.), Salads, Raw Desserts and Raw Dips with Vegetables or Raw Crackers.

I juice fruit for the kids each morning and sometimes I have a glass of that during the day with the remainder usually going towards Green Smoothies. I also drink loads of water, which I feel is very important.

SOME RAW FOOD QUOTES FOR YOU!

"98% of all pharmaceutical drugs and "natural" suplements should be replaced with whole foods... It's the truest truth." - Don Tolman.

"If anything is sacred, the human body is sacred". - Walt Whitman.

"The food you eat can be either the safest and most powerful form of medicine, or the slowest form of poison." - Dr. Ann Wigmore, N.D

"Before there was fire, there was raw and we were here for billions of years on a raw diet so obviously it works. Suddenly, cooked food has come out and we're all fat, unhealthy, dying, sick and about to wipe ourselves off the face of the earth with nuclear weapons, which are also cooked." - Juliano on Go Vegan Texas!, July 22, 2002

Raw Veganism From Wikipedia

Raw veganism is a diet which combines veganism and raw foodism. It excludes all food of animal origin, and all food cooked above 48 degrees Celsius (118 degrees Fahrenheit). A raw vegan diet includes raw vegetables and fruits, nuts and nut pastes, grain and legume sprouts, seeds, plant oils, sea vegetables, herbs, and fresh juices. There are many different versions of the diet, including fruitarianism, juicearianism, and sproutarianism. Sometimes the definition of a raw vegan diet is loosened to include vegan diets with at least 75% raw foods.

Foods To Snack On For Enhanced Productivity

Yummy Healthy Snacks!

Most people eat to lose weight, get healthy and build muscle. There are some people, however, who snack correctly in order to enhance their productivity. The following is a list of foods you can eat to improve your eye-sight, improve your performance, energize your brain and keep your day on track.

Avocados. These keep you from bloating up after a big lunch and are tasty either on their own, with sea salt on top, or with your salad.

Almonds. Great for brainpower.

Raisins. Want more energy? Grab a pack of raisins. They are high in energy and antioxidants, and low in fat and calories.

Figs. They help maintain high energy levels while keeping your appetite far away. Whether you find fresh figs or a pack of dried fruit, enjoy its natural sweetness.

Olives. These are anti-inflammatory and they reduce symptoms to arthritis, asthma and menopause.

Walnuts. These are full of omega 3 fatty acids to help you think more clearly and keep you focused. Excellent source of protein, but be sure to chew well.

Carrots. Snacking on one cup of chopped carrots will give you six times your recommended daily value of Vitamin A. They improve eyesight, especially in the dark.

Strawberries. As with carrots and flaxseeds, strawberries surprisingly aid in better eye sight. Eating strawberries has also been linked to preventing cancer.

Flaxseeds. If you've been working hard all day, have some flaxseeds. They are great for your eyes to stop them feeling a little dried out, and allowing you to feel fresh even after a hard day. Grind them up and sprinkle on foods.

Water. Nothing beats water, the healthiest drink on the planet. It speeds up your metabolism, makes you feel fuller instead of eating junk and keeps you hydrated.

Sunflower seeds. A popular way to beat fatigue. Chew properly as it can take some time.

Papaya. The colorful fruit helps protect you against the potential damages of secondhand smoke, rheumatoid arthritis, and even the common cold.

Pear. Usually only available during the pear season and when they come out, I always get them. They taste good, they're cool in the mouth and they are hypo-allergenic.

Green tea. So this is probably one of the trendiest tea's out there, but it's also very healthy for your body. They are full of antioxidants and
strengthens your immune system.

Ginger. Great for beating nausea and stomach gas. Have it as ginger tea, ginger in your stomach or as low fat ginger cookies. Also helps ease stomach tummy muscles.

Peppermint. If you have a stomach bug or just need to perk up a bit, have a peppermint drink. It's a great muscle relaxant and helps you clean up your nasal passages and breathe easily.

Watermelon. There is nothing like cool, red sweet watermelon that gives you great energy and nutrients without any calories. It's a great energy booster.

Raspberries. These beautiful fruits are a great source of antioxidants which are great to neutralize your free radicals which can affect your cells.

Goji Berries. Truly raw, organic, sundried goji berries are high in antioxidants, a full specturum of amino acids and one of the highest sources of vitamin c known on the planet.

The Joy of Raw

Sushi rice can be made from parsnips and pine nuts, cheese from cashews and cream from coconut!
Raw Foodists focus their diet on raw fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, sea vegetables, berries, herbs, sprouts, flowers and wild greens.

Food can be eaten as is, or used in recipes to create anything from a simple salad to a beautiful lasagna or crackers and cheese. Common tools people use are knives and cutting boards for the simple, to food processors, blenders and dehydrators for more intense recipes. Often preparing raw food takes less time than conventional. Like any new skill it takes time to learn, but once you do you reap so many benefits. Increased levels of energy hooked New York chef Matthew Kenney and his partner Sarma Melngailis on the raw food diet.

"After a few weeks we realized that we weren't going back to regular cooking," said Kenney, who opened a raw food restaurant in New York City, and co-authored a raw food cookbook. "In the beginning, keep it simple," he says.

Matthew and Sarma have done what we at Raw Pleasure consider to be the most glamorous book on Raw Food yet created. It's called Raw Food Real World and is available in the Raw Pleasure shop.

Portion Size and Weight Control

Have you ever wondered how portion size affects how much you eat? New research suggests that larger portion sizes may cause people to eat more. Scientists are calling the psycological effect of portion sizing "unit bias". This is a good pointer for those who are looking to lose weight or for the health conscious because even when eating healthy food, the amount matters.

According to studies, the portion size of the food put in front of you influences how much you will eat. For example, in one study, researchers put a large jar of M&M's on a table with a small scoop for one day, then a larger scoop the next. The results showed that when the larger scoop was in the jar, people would eat more, assuming the scoop was a normal serving size.

This supports the theory that people will generally eat what is placed in front of them at meal times, or at least try to! Ainsley Laing from the eZine, Body for Mind, noticed while travelling the difference between serving sizes at restaraunts and the corresponding "fatness" of the area. She also noticed that after spending time in an area that served larger than normal portions, she felt more inclined to order more in an area with smaller portions, when she wouldn't usually.

If you look at the incredible amount of super-sized, value-sized meals, drinks and snacks available in the modern world today, "unit bias" is probably a phenomenon to note and wonder how this affects not only yourself as an individual but the health of our world and the people in it.

Goji Berry Cookies

Another Delicious Recipe From www.Raw-Pleasure.com.au

Goji Berry Cookies

Description

These cookies are great as is, even better dehydrated for a couple of hours. They are some of the tastiest raw cookies I have ever tried!

At a glance

Cuisine - Asian/European

Equipment - Food Processor + Dehydrator

Course - Cookies / Brownies / Bars

Makes 1 batch (Created by Piers)

Ingredients

2 small apples
1/2 cup goji berries
1/2 cup currants
2 tsp organic cinnamon
2-3 tbs agave nectar / yacon syrup
Pinch Celtic sea salt / Himalayan rock salt
2 cups soaked dehydrated buckwheat flour
1 tsp ginger

Methods/steps

Mix the above in a food processor until well mixed but still with lots of texture (apple pieces, + dried fruit)

These cookies are great as is, even better dehydrated for a couple of hours. Piers loved them most after 12 hours in the dehydrator at 118 degrees. I liked them after about three when the outside was starting to get crisp, but the center was soft and warm.

Additional Tips

The moisture in these cookies comes from the blended apple, and a little from the sweetener. If you don't have agave or yacon you could also soak dates in a little water and puree.

To make soaked dehydrated buckwheat flour all you need to do is soak the buckwheat (hull removed raw) for 3-5 hours, rinse, sprout 0-2 days if desired, then dehydrate until crispy. I do this when I buy my buckwheat, so it's all ready to use in recipes. If you don't have a dehydrator that's fine - just use wet... you'll just need to dehydrate the cookeis a little longer. Actually buckwheat dries so easily that leaving it spread out in a strainer, in a warm dry place for a couple of hours is often enough! True dehydrating in the sun would be perfect.

Study: Pottenger's Cats

From ten years, from 1932 to 1942, Dr Francis Marion Pottenger, Jr. (often misspelled Pottinger) ran an experiment to determine the effects of heat-processed food on cats.

He was inspired to do the study when he noticed a high death rate among his laboratory cats. Dr. Pottenger fed his cats a diet of raw milk, cod liver oil and cooked meat scraps, which included liver, tripe, sweetbreads, brains, heart and muscle. This was considered the optimum diet for cats at the time.

In addition to poor survival after surgeries, Dr. Pottenger noticed the cats showed a decrease in their reproductive capacity. Many of the kittens born in the laboratory also showed skeletal deformities and organ malfunctions. At one point he was unable to keep up the levels of cooked meat needed to feed the increasing number of cats, and resorted to feeding a group of them raw meat instead. A scientist at heart he kept this group separate so he could see the effects of dietary change on the cats. Within only a few months, the cats fed raw meat appeared healthier, their kittens more vigorous, and they had a higher survival rate after their operations.

The contrast between the two sets of cats was so startling, Dr Pottenger performed a controlled experiment to verify the results scientifically.

The experiment included 900 cats over four generations. It was well documented by Dr. Pottenger. The cats were divided into five groups. All the groups were supplied the same basic minimal diet, but the major portion of the diets were varied. Two of the groups were fed whole foods (raw milk and meat - real foods for cats). The other three groups were given processed foods: pasteurized, evaporated and condensed milk.

All four generations of the raw meat and raw milk groups remained healthy throughout their normal lifespans. The first generation of all three processed food groups developed diseases and illnesses near the end of their lives. The second generation of all three processed food groups developed diseases and illnesses in the middle of their lives. The third generation of all three processed food groups developed diseases and illnesses in the beginning of their lives and many died before six months of age. There was no fourth generation in any of the three processed food groups. Either the third generation parents were sterile or the fourth generation cats were died before birth! Remember, all four generations of the raw food groups were healthy throughout their normal lifespans.

As for as applying his results to human nutrition, Dr. Pottenger said, "While no attempt will be made to correlate the changes in the animals studied with malformations found in humans, the similarity is so obvious that parallel pictures will suggest themselves."

Does this make you question the level of disease and sickness in the 'modern' world today. Rising levels of childhood obesity, cancer, behavioral 'disorders'. Sickness is on the rise and it's time to stop playing the role of the cooked cats in Pottenger's study!

Juices May Reduce Alzheimer's Risk

A study has found that people who drank three or more servings of fruit and vegetable juices per week had a whopping 76 percent lower risk of developing Alzheimer's disease than those who drank juice less than once per week.

The study was done by Qi Dai, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of Medicine, and colleagues and can be found in the September issue of The American Journal of Medicine.

The study spanned 10 years. A total of 1,836 dementia-free subjects in the Seattle population were chosen and their cognitive function and diet were evaluated every two years for ten years.
The subjects were chosen due to the low incidence rate of Alzheimer's disease in the Japanese population in Japan, compared to the high levels in Japenese living in the USA. This factor led them to believe that environmental factors like diet and lifestyle were important contributors to disease risk.

Originally, researchers suspected that high intakes of antioxidant vitamins (vitamins C, E and -carotene) might provide some protection against Alzheimer's disease, but recent clinical studies have not supported this hypothesis.

"We thought that the underlying component may not be vitamins, that there was maybe something else," Dai said.

Greek Health Crusader Is Arrested For Ordering Hemp Protein

On Wednesday morning July 16th, Anna Korakaki went to her local post office in Athens, Greece to pick up her latest health product order from Navitas Naturals, a health food company based in the USA. Moments after accepting her package Anna was immediately intercepted by 4 police officers, thrown on the hood of a police car and brutally handcuffed. Police then ransacked her apartment and after finding nothing suspicious or illegal, took Anna to a police station for further interrogation.

Chanthaburi province is the heart of Thailand orchard country, 240 km [145 miles] southeast of Bangkok, and the durian capital of the world in terms of production - Thailand produces approximately a million tons of durian per year, and over half comes from Chanthaburi province and another 25% from neighboring Rayong province. Both provinces hold festive fruit fairs at peak season, when durians, mangosteens, rambutans, mangos, longkong/langsat, jackfruit, longans, pineapples, papayas, bananas, coconuts, sugar apples, dragonfruit, and more are present in great lavish abundance. Durian fruit with no odour?

That's no fun!

The durian fruit, widely considered to be the world's smelliest, may soon lose its distinctive odour.

The Thai government is set to announce that one of its leading horticultural scientists has cracked the challenge of producing a durian that does not pong.

Durians are banned from many hotels and airlines in south-east Asia, where they are widely grown.

Long-term Pesticide Exposure May Increase Risk of Diabetes

Licensed pesticide applicators who used chlorinated pesticides on more than 100 days in their lifetime were at greater risk of diabetes, according to researchers from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The associations between specific pesticides and incident diabetes ranged from a 20 percent to a 200 percent increase in risk, said the scientists with the NIH's National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI).

Why Feed Your Dog Raw?

A raw diet provides a range of benefits that commercial dog food can never hope match.

Some of these benefits include:

None of that doggy smell!!
Clean teeth with no special brushing, expensive dog toys or doggy dental check-ups with teeth cleaning. No gum disease either
Raw foods take longer for dogs to eat, giving their digestive systems time to get ready for the meal.
Smaller and easier bowel movements - on raw meat dogs stools are smaller and firm and go white and break up within days.

Decreased medical expenses (they are healthier)
Save money - real food is cheaper than processed
Feed your dog a more natural diet that mirrors what it would eat in the wild. The modern day dog has the same digestive tract as a wolf
Puppies develop more normally - quick growth spurts are avoided. Good breeders know to avoid fast growth spurts.
The active process of eating raw natural foods develops the jaw, neck, and shoulder muscles of the dog.
Commercial dog food is made from biologically inappropriate foods. Many are filled up with cheap grains and rice. The meat in them is the lowest quality unfit for human consumption. Doesn't your dog deserve better than this?

Guess what? This isn't just for dogs... people on a healthy raw food diet get healthier too!!

Reduced body odour
Clean teeth with less plaque build up and reduced gum disease.
Raw foods take longer to eat an equal amount of calories, meaning you are satiated more quickly, and also take in a higher level of nutrients. This gives your digestive system a chance to recognize and get ready for what you eat too.
Smaller and easier bowel movements.
Decreased medical expenses (we are healthier)
Save money - real food is cheaper than processed
Feed yourself a natural diet that more closely mirrors what humans ate before the modern processed diet. Even going back 100 years to before mass use of white sugar and added chemicals would have a huge health impact.
Children develop more normally - quick growth spurts are avoided. Good parents know to avoid fast growth spurts (can cause stretch marks, and early puberty).
The active process of eating raw natural foods develops the jaw, neck, and shoulder muscles and promotes strong and healthy teeth.
Commercial packaged food is made from biologically inappropriate foods (herbicides, fungicides, articificial colours, preservatives, artificial flavouring and maybe a little bit of food!). Many are filled up with cheap fillers. Even some of the so called "green powders" on the market are full of ground grains. Don't you deserve better than this?
See - it's really all so very simple!

Major Fashion Designer Goes Raw

Donna Karan is a well-known design who created an empire making the bodies of celebrities look beautiful. Today it is her own figure that is turning heads. The designer, 54, recently shed 20 pounds (almost 10 kg), thanks to a diet of all raw foods.

"I love vegetables, soups and salads, so, for me, that part was easy," she says. "Like everybody else, I crave, and the craving's the problem - you have to make sure that you're taken care of. You want to feel comforted, and, at the same time, satisfied and full. It's not about deprivation."

Once Karan changed her diet, she found it relatively easy to avoid previous bad habits.
"It's such a cleansing diet. It really affects me now when I eat poorly. I don't drink a lot of alcohol. I might have one glass of wine, but if I eat badly, I just don't feel as well. My body has definitely changed. With the amount of work that I do, and the pace at which I live my life, it's important to keep nutritionally balanced. On this diet, I can keep going."
Karan lives a very healthy active life with two hours of yoga. She then grazes on raw food all day.

Did she always eat healthy food?

"No. Well, yes and no. Pizza is my favourite food and I love biscuits and ice cream. But Jill makes fresh fruit sorbets for me and they taste even better."

"This diet can be really simple. First thing in the morning, instead of coffee, I drink hot water with fresh lemon and I also like ginger and peppermint tea," she says. "I take a Thermos of hot soup with me during the day and I can snack on that wherever I am. Biscuits, you can stash. Nuts are easy to have, and anything that is dried is really good."

She says, "Eat what you want to eat. But you have to break the pattern. There is a discipline with any diet, and it usually takes about five days to get into it, but once you're into it, you're fine."

Composting Tips

Almost any organic material is suitable for a compost pile. The pile needs a proper ratio of carbon-rich materials, or "browns," and nitrogen-rich materials, or "greens." Among the brown materials are dried leaves, straw, and wood chips. Nitrogen materials are fresh or green, such as grass clippings and kitchen scraps.

Mixing certain types of materials or changing the proportions can make a difference in the rate of decomposition. Achieving the best mix is more an art gained through experience than an exact science. The ideal ratio approaches 25 parts browns to 1 part greens. Judge the amounts roughly equal by weight. Too much carbon will cause the pile to break down too slowly, while too much nitrogen can cause odor. The carbon provides energy for the microbes, and the nitrogen provides protein.

Leaves represent a large percentage of total yard waste. If you can grind them in a gas or electric chipper shredder or mow over them, they will reduce in size making them easier to store until you can use them in the pile, and they will decompose faster - an issue with larger leaves. They are loaded with minerals brought up from the tree roots and are a natural source of carbon. A few leaf species such as live oak, southern magnolia, and holly trees are too tough and leathery for easy composting. Avoid all parts of the black walnut tree as they contain a plant poison that survives composting. Eucalyptus leaves can be toxic to other plants. And avoid using poison oak, poison ivy, and sumac.

Pine Needles need to be chopped or shredded, as they decompose slowly. They are covered with a thick, waxy coating. In very large quantities, they can acidify your compost, which would be a good thing if you have alkaline soils.

Grass Clippings break down quickly and contain as much nitrogen as manure. Since fresh grass clippings will clump together, become anerobic, and start to smell, mix them with plenty of brown material. If you have a lot of grass clippings to compost, spread them on the driveway or other surface to bake in the sun for at least a day. Once it begins to turn pale or straw-like, it can be used without danger of souring. Avoid grass clippings that contain pesticide or herbicide residue, unless a steady rain has washed the residue from the grass blades.

Kitchen Refuse includes melon rinds, carrot peelings, tea bags, apple cores, banana peels - almost everything that cycles through your kitchen. The average household produces more than 200 pounds of kitchen waste every year. You can successfully compost all forms of kitchen waste. However, meat, meat products, dairy products, and high-fat foods like salad dressings and peanut butter, can present problems. Meat scraps and the rest will decompose eventually, but will smell bad and attract pests. Egg shells are a wonderful addition, but decompose slowly, so should be crushed. All additions to the compost pile will decompose more quickly if they are chopped up some before adding.

To collect your kitchen waste, you can keep a small compost pail in the kitchen to bring to the pile every few days. Keep a lid on the container to discourage insects. When you add kitchen scraps to the compost pile, cover them with about 8" of brown material to reduce visits by flies or critters.

Wood Ashes from a wood burning stove or fireplace can be added to the compost pile. Ashes are alkaline, so add no more than 2 gallon-sized buckets-full to a pile with 3'x3'x3' dimensions. They are especially high in potassium. Don't use coal ashes, as they usually contain large amounts of sulfur and iron that can injure your plants. Used charcoal briquettes don't decay much at all, so it's best not to use them.

Garden Refuse should make the trip to the pile. All of the spent plants, thinned seedlings, and deadheaded flowers can be included. Most weeds and weed seeds are killed when the pile reaches an internal temperature above 130 degrees, but some may survive. To avoid problems don't compost weeds with persistent root systems, and weeds that are going to seed.

Spoiled Hay or Straw makes an excellent carbon base for a compost pile, especially in a place where few leaves are available. Hay contains more nitrogen than straw. They may contain weed seeds, so the pile must have a high interior temperature. The straw's little tubes will also keep the pile breathing.

Manure is one of the finest materials you can add to any compost pile. It contains large amounts of both nitrogen and beneficial microbes. Manure for composting can come from bats, sheep, ducks, pigs, goats, cows, pigeons, and any other vegetarian animal. As a rule of thumb, you should avoid manure from carnivores, as it can contain dangerous pathogens. Most manures are considered "hot" when fresh, meaning it is so rich in nutrients that it can burn the tender roots of young plants or overheat a compost pile, killing off earthworms and friendly bacteria. If left to age a little, however, these materials are fine to use.

Manure is easier to transport and safer to use if it is rotted, aged, or composted before it's used. Layer manure with carbon-rich brown materials such as straw or leaves to keep your pile in balance.

Seaweed is an excellent source of nutrient-rich composting material. Use the hose to wash off the salt before sending it to the compost pile.

The list of organic materials which can be added to the compost pile is long. There are industrial and commercial waste products you may have access to in abundance. The following is a partial list: corncobs, cotton waste, restaurant or farmer's market scraps, grapevine waste, sawdust, greensand, hair, hoof and horn meal, hops, peanut shells, paper and cardboard, rock dust, sawdust, feathers, cottonseed meal, blood meal, bone meal, citrus wastes, coffee, alfalfa, and ground seashells.

HSUS Investigation Leads to Largest Beef Recall in U.S. History

February 18, 2008

Group Calls on USDA to Close Loophole in Its Policy on Slaughter of Crippled Cows and on Congress to Enact Tougher Laws

In the wake of the staggering recall of 143 million pounds of beef-the largest in the nation's history by far-The Humane Society of the United States is calling on the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Congress to take immediate steps to strengthen federal humane handling procedures and to enact more stringent laws to prevent a recurrence of the gross abuses documented at a southern California slaughter plant.

The HSUS affirmed the USDA-initiated recall as a prudent response. While most of the recalled beef has already been consumed, the recall is an appropriate measure not only to mitigate risks to public health, but also to send a message that such inhumane behavior can have dramatic consequences for slaughter plants which permit it.

The HSUS also called on USDA to change its policy and prohibit the slaughter of all-not just some-downed cows. As well, the organization is asserting that this case further underscores the need for Congress to enact pending farm animal welfare legislation -- the Downed Animal and Food Safety Protection Act and the Farm Animal Stewardship Purchasing Act - with no further delay.

The beef recall came in response to The Humane Society of the United States' investigation documenting crippled cows being tormented at a Southern California slaughter plant. The abuse occurred even though USDA had a number of inspectors at the slaughter plant.

HSUS President & CEO Wayne Pacelle stated, "A recall of this staggering scale shows it's bad for animals, bad for consumers, and bad for business to have slipshod enforcement and porous laws when it comes to handling animals at slaughter plants."

After being provided videotaped evidence and a detailed report of the undercover investigation, San Bernardino County District Attorney Michael Ramos on Friday charged one of the slaughter plant's employees with five felony counts under California's anti-cruelty statute and three misdemeanor counts for abusing downed animals. A second worker was charged with three misdemeanors counts of abusing downed animals.

Pacelle continued, "The plant HSUS investigated has been shut down indefinitely, its products have been recalled, and two of its employees are now facing criminal charges, with additional legal action almost certain to follow. Every slaughter plant in the nation should heed the messages sent by this investigation."

Because the slaughter plant, Hallmark/Westland, shipped potentially dangerous ground beef to schools across the country as part of the National School Lunch Program, The HSUS also urges the USDA to take swift criminal and civil action to make sure Hallmark and its management are held responsible for this criminal conduct.

Timeline:

Feb. 17, 2008: USDA announces recall of 143 million pounds of beef, the nation's largest recall to date, from Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Co.

Feb. 15, 2008: San Bernardino County District Attorney Michael A. Ramos charges Daniel Ugarte Navarro with five felony counts under California's anti-cruelty statute and three misdemeanor counts alleging the use of a mechanical device to move "downer" cows, those unable to stand on their own, and a second worker, Jose Luis Sanchez, with three misdemeanors involving downers.

Feb. 5, 2008: USDA announces it has pulled its inspectors and shut down the cattle slaughter plant that was the subject of an HSUS undercover investigation. USDA Undersecretary Dr. Richard Raymond cites "egregious violations of humane handling regulations" in pulling inspectors from the plant.

Jan. 31, 2008: The HSUS urges schools in 36 states to stop serving Westland meat received through the National School Lunch Program.

Jan. 30, 2008: USDA suspends Westland Meat Co. as a supplier to the National School Lunch Program and other federal nutrition programs, in response to the weeks-long HSUS investigation of the plant.

Jan. 30, 2008: The HSUS reveals weeks-long investigation's findings of widespread mistreatment of nonambulatory dairy cows at a Hallmark Meat Packing Co., of Chino, California.

The Humane Society of the United States is the nation's largest animal protection organization - backed by 10.5 million Americans, or one of every 30. For more than a half-century, The HSUS has been fighting for the protection of all animals through advocacy, education and hands-on programs.
