A variety of additional features are possible on these devices ranging from basic features such as clocks, calendars, and calorie calculators to more advanced features including such things as stop watches, split counters, recovery heart rate monitors, speed and distance monitors, PC interfaces to download data to your personal computer, various alerts and alarms to help you stay within defined target activity zones, and coded transmissions to make sure your monitor is picking up your heart rate and not the person next to you in the gym or on a run.
Several of the monitors keep track of your location, speed etc., using GPS sensing. Others use foot pads to provide more accurate results for runners. Some Heart Rate Monitor Features to Understand
A Heart Rate Monitor (HRM) is a useful tool to help you keep track of your heart rate and the level of exertion you are using during your exercise routine. They all will provide you with essential information on your heart rate, and often much more. The more serious you are about your exercise regimen the more likely you will want to purchase one of the premium models. If you are just starting out though, your best bet will be to get an inexpensive one at first and upgrade later when you are ready to move on to a more serious training program.

- The major difference between womens and mens monitors has more to do with wrist size and colors
- There are two major options for tracking your distance, cadence and routes: GPS or Foot Pads

Price and features are the keys to your selection process. If you are a beginner and/or don't like the idea of a strap you should look at the strapless finger sensor models. They tend to be cheaper, but less robust in their capabilities. As noted above the only real differences between women's and men's styles is the size of the monitor and strap and colors. Below are some of the major features you may want to look for when making you decision.
Consider the following:
- Get a monitor that provides alerts when you fall below or exceed your targeted heart rates
- Some monitors require an authorized service center to replace batteries, others have longer and shorter battery lives.
- Many models allow you to upload data to a computer or to their proprietary analysis software. Others do not.
- Active runners and Bicyclist may want to also measure their distances, and cadences via GPS or via Foot Pads
- In additon to a clock and calendar, even many lower cost models offer calorie counters and pedometer capabilites
- A worthwhile plus is any monitor that also tracks the time it takes you to return to a resting heart rate
- More sophisticated models allow you to program targets and time in zones
- A stop watch and the ability to monitor and record multiple laps or splits is a key feature for many runners
- If you workout in a gym or run in groups, get a HRM with coded data so you don't get your neighbors heart rate via crosstalk
