My Mission to Do 1001 Pieces of Heart Art

Several years ago I had an idea to make 1001 hearts. I also had the idea to sell miniature, artist-trading-card-sized (2.5 x 3.5 inches) pieces of original art on eBay, which I tried and failed at. I was apparently just six months ahead of the curve. I recently discovered that there is now an entire art collectors movement on eBay and in blogs for miniature pieces of art, and also artists who are doing one piece of art each day. At last! My time has come!

I am on a mission to make 1000 pieces of heart-themed art, one each day, in a variety of media. This is, obviously, #27. Where did it come from?

How did the heart symbol that we all know so well come into being, and why does it look nothing like a physical human heart?
