Heartburn Home Remedy!

It is possible to successfully treat your heartburn using a heartburn home remedy. Heartburn can range from minor to excessive discomfort as your stomach acid is affecting your esophagus. The esophagus does not have the protective lining that the stomach has so this can be quite painful. The most common name for heartburn is acid reflux though it is also known as bloating, indigestion, borborygmus and dyspepsia.

Heartburn has many associated symptoms with the most common being pain in the neck and shoulders after eating, pressure or pain below the breastbone, feeling of fullness, growling stomach, acid taste in mouth, excessive gas, upper abdominal heaviness, mild nausea and a burning below the breastbone. The exact cause of heartburn is unknown though a weakened sphincter plays and important role as does increased acid production and pressure in the stomach.

A few home remedies include not smoking or making sure you do not smoke before or during food consumption. Smoking will slow down your body's ability to digest food, can cause you to swallow small pockets of air, which can add pressure to the stomach and esophagus. Nicotine itself will weaken your sphincter over time. If you have very intense heartburn and are a smoker then it is to your benefit to stop smoking.

You can avoid heartburn by monitoring which foods trigger heartburn and avoiding these foods. Some common foods that cause heartburn include beans, cabbage, onions, cucumbers, citrus fruit and chocolate to name but a few. Foods that are acidic, oily, very spicy or produce gas will all aggravate your stomach and can cause heartburn.

To get your body digesting at its maximum capacity, you can take a walk right after eating as this gets your metabolism going. It does not need to be a vigorous power walk. A leisurely walk at a normal pace can do wonders for digestion. Brisk or strenuous exercising after a large meal will increase your chances of having heartburn, so take it easy with the movements.

Many recommended medications will absorb any excess acids that may accumulate in the stomach and stimulate your digestion so the window for heartburn to occur is very small. Liquids are recommended as they work faster then a pill or tablet. An effective heartburn home remedy is to sip peppermint tea.

The way that most medications and heartburn home remedies work are that they absorb the extra acid in your stomach so it cannot be released into the esophagus. In this regard, fiber is quite effective in reducing acid levels as well as removal of built-up toxins in your digestive system. Drink adequate amounts of water also. Another longstanding remedy is ginger which has a calming effect on the stomach.
