What She's Going Through

Heartburn in pregnancy is no joke. Acid reflux is something that I have suffered with for the last 12 years and now my wife has to go through this a second time with our second child.

How Does Heartburn In Pregnancy Happen

During pregnancy, the placenta produces the hormone progesterone, which relaxes the smooth muscles of the uterus. This hormone also relaxes the valve that separates the esophagus from the stomach, allowing gastric acids to seep back up.

Progesterone also slows down the wavelike contractions of your esophagus and intestines, making digestion sluggish. Later in pregnancy, your growing baby crowds your abdominal cavity, pushing the stomach acids back up into the esophagus.

Many women start experiencing heartburn and other gastrointestinal discomforts in the second half of pregnancy.

Solutions to Heartburn In Pregnancy

A couple of things you can try.

  • Chew bubble gum. Chewing gum can increase saliva which is high in alkaline that counteracts the acid in your stomach.

  • Avoid caffeine and dairy products, these can increase the production of stomach acid.

  • Eat small meals throughout the day instead of one big one.

  • Don't smoke, you shouldn't be doing this if your pregnant anyway.

  • Mustard, something I recently heard of from an Indian lady. Who knows, it's in everyone's refrigerator so why not.

  • Apple cider vinegar, try 1 teaspoon in a cup of water if you can handle the taste.
  • #1 - Beat Reflux

    My top pick.

#2 - Naturally Stop Acid Reflux

    Second best.

    #3 - Heartburn No More

    Third pick.
