The Etsy Community Steps up to the Plate

Hearts for Haiti was an Etsy collective of hundreds of Etsy shops who generously donated items to raise money to assist the relief efforts in Haiti. 100% of the proceeds from this shop (after Etsy fees and PayPal fees) went directly to DoctorsWithoutBorders. All items included seller-donated free shipping (most worldwide, see individual listing) because the need was SO great, we want you to buy and help support Etsians helping Haiti.

This shop had permission to use the DoctorsWithoutBorders name and held a separate bank account and Paypal account to maintain the integrity of this shop.

Hearts for Haiti was run 100% on volunteer love.

Who are the dedicated volunteers?

What impressed me most about the Hearts for Haiti Shop and these ladies is that the idea was first planted by a simple inquiry on the Etsy Discussion Forums.

On January 13, 2010, Victoria wrote "I would love to see and potentially help to organize an Etsy shop established to fundraise for relief efforts in Haiti".

Dedicated volunteers came forward immediately. Yes, there was much to do; contacting Etsy, Doctors Without Borders, PayPal, bank, and so much more. And yet the Hearts for Haiti Shop was opened the following day and everything was organized and in place to start listing on January 16, 2010, and the donations poured in!

The generosity of the Etsy community, both sellers and buyers, was overwhelming and only one week later, they had already raised over $10,000. (and now over $32,000) .

Yes, I could have just sent in a cheque to a charitable organization, but I wanted to contribute and be a part of what I thought would be something special (and this is).

The main shopkeep is:

Victoria van der Laan of exlibrishandmade

The other dedicated volunteers are:

This is so heartwarming to see the outpouring of support. The other day I was at Jacksonville Orthopedic Institute and overheard that one of the doctors from there was away in Haiti helping. Heartwarming!

That is definitely heartwarming. People often step up to the plate when the need is greatest. And thank you Julie for all your help promoting of the shop (and buying too LOL), you are such a sweetheart - Kathy
