Thank you for all that you do for the homeless. Giving them a voice is probably one of the best things you can do to end the stereotyping and help make changes to their lives. Thanks for all that you do. Bear hugs, Frankster

    Amazing lens!
Yeah its so sad how so many people have nothing, and yet they can still be so happy! That is why I want to work hard and make a lot of money so I can help other people who really need it and build shelters and make oppertunities.

I have no fixed idea yet, but was thinking along the lines of getting a huge plot of land, and making a small civilisation out of it, build lots of rooms, have shared facilities like a gym, a pool, internet access, and just give lots of homeless people on of those rooms. In return, they would learn to educate themselves through programs i would run, and they would grow fruits an vegetables on the land so they contribute to food. Of course I would provide food for everyone, and just build up a community like that, even see if I can bring it to the point where they would sustain themselves. start with a few hundred people, and then build it up to accomodate maybe a few thousand or more.

    sigh...big dreams:)

    again...great lens

    Hello from Hawaii:
even in Hawaii there is the homeless. When I visited Japan in 1979, there were homeless. It's not an easy sight to see either. I catch the bus daily to go to and from the library where I use the public computers. I saw one day a young man, picking through the rubbish can for things to eat. There are several solutions:
    1. Welfare for all who can't find jobs, the aged, and etc.
    2. Foodbank: http://foodbank.org/ and hungersite.com. Hungersite.com is from the United Nations.
    3. And your lens to let people know, people are people with and without homes all with their own stories.

The Govenor locally just built a homes for the homeless recently and this is another solution too. My friend has a friend who is totally wheelchair bound who was living on welfare. My friend's friend went to Washington to try to stop them from taking his welfare away from him. It's very scary what some people have to go through. There are homeless whellchair people now though.

We like to be heard, regardless of who and where we are in society. And it is only as we see real faces, do we understand who they are. Yet, not to make the homeless like us, but to listen and hear their stories (and some have some horrible tales to tell) accept them for who they are, as individuals and provide some level of dignity and security, even if we can't get them off the streets and into homes.

Great lens, Bob. I viewed the videos and I hope I will be able to see the documentary when it is completed.

This is going to be an eye-opener, to those who don't know much about the homeless people, those unfortunate folks who can barely survive, in our rich and affluent societies! I've shared a few times with homeless folks too, and even ate with them in their "soup kitchens" as well. We are ALL people and need a whole LOT more LOVE. Thanx for the LOVE dude...

    LarryB

Job well done Bob! It is SO GOOD that you and your friends want to spread the word about that whole "almost invisible" scene, and are doing something Big, about it all!

Congrats on the Top 100! It is great that you have taken the time to shed light on the plight of the homeless. They are people too. It happens to people from all walks of life for different reasons. Many are former foster children. We all are one job loss, one injury, one mental illness, one natural disaster away from homelessness. Keep up the good work.

Wonderful lens. Keep on with your "Hearts of Fire" Project. I appreciate your love for human beings as human beings only, not based on any other criteria.

I have a homeless artist as one of the artists in my gallery. It is very interesting working with her. She seems to be permanently homeless--has moved city to city and stayed in shelters in several of them.

This is a very moving lens, got to give you 5***** and congratulations on LOTD. It is a shame that homeless people get stereotyped, but I think it's like many things, the bad people of all types cause this. People from the Caribbean or African Americans are often assumed to be drug dealers, people from the middle east are assumed to be all terrorists. It's not true. I will click on the video later, sounds good.

Wow.That is really deep. Interesting how they were so open to sharing their stories with you and your crew. Your lens reminds me of an old Phil Collins song. Anyway, keep up the work with Heart of Fire:)

It sounds like you are doing some fantastic stuff! Having worked for the past few years in the area of homelessness and mental health, I wish everyone had your desire to treat all people AS people, with dignity, respect and the value each deserves. I too will never the forget the moments of kindness and grace, that someone who the world looks down upon, has shown to me in great generosity. Thanks j

Right from the moment of our birth, we are under the care and kindness of our parents and then later on in our life when we are oppressed by sickness and become old, we are again dependent on other's kindness.

How can it be that in the middle we neglet kindness towards others?

I was a little confused at first, because your introduction doesn't mention that your story is about a music video. But I did enjoy reading! Do the proceeds from your products go to a specific charity or group? Thank you for sharing your experiences; homelessness is a very important issue that everyone should consider.

Homeless in America how sad is that! I am glad people like you are helping keep up the good work!!
  • site-builder Sep 20, 2008 @ 10:38 am | delete
You deserve the highest rating for "hearts of fire". Your one of my favorites too. The main reason people feel uneasy or uncomfortable around homeless people is fear, plain and simple. We live in a fear based society.
It's time for us to awaken from our slumber.

Nice idea! Great Project & Very Good Len. Give you 5 star from me :)
  • Mia-Breitfuss Sep 20, 2008 @ 10:18 am | delete
There is no 'them' and 'us' there is only us. Thanks Bob for sharing.

While in San Francisco I remember sucking myself in holding my breath and desperately trying to practice the dead eyes that move on quickly past the homeless souls that live on the edge of my otherwise comfortable life.

I didn't like what I thought when I saw a homeless person. I didn't want to be afraid.

I want to look and to see, but more than that I want to let myself be seen and be the person brave enough not to look away.

What an amazing thing to do! You have a great lens which will help many to better understand the plight of the homeless. Thanks for doing that so well !

I really like this project. I just got a call from a friend the other day who said she is homeless. With the economy, there are many homeless people and we tend to stereotype them. Drunks and Druggies. But some are just like you and I.

Well done! Yes, we feel uncomfortable around the homeless, because we know we could so easily be there ourselves. Well written. Thank you.

bless you... this is long overdue and so very needed... I have spoken, prayed at and for homeless people, been homeless myself for short periods of time, (having to stay in motels, camping out) and I am college educated, middle class, and strongly object to the way homeless people are treated, shuffled together in shelters out of sight, in a system that does not care for their long-term needs, just cramming people together like animals, short fixes for a huge problem, and I want there to be programs, where people can come, ANYONE can come, have their short and long term needs addressed by CARING human beings, with DIGNITY and RESPECT... places where people can EAT GOOD HOMECOOKED MEALS, decent food, decent homes for homeless people... yurts, trailers, homes for human beings ... Homeless people are PEOPLE, PEOPLE !!!
  • MoonstoneWhipser Sep 20, 2008 @ 7:04 am | delete
Its so easy to forget the richness of life in the scramble for the crumbs of societies illusion of success. Each person needs to find their own version of success and be true to themselves. In a strange way some of these people seem much richer to me than many of those around me. Yet also those with wealth (financial) can also be rich in spirit. Thank you for your lovely lens.

Knowing the humanity of others is the bottom line. If we don't know people others can tell us anything they want to about them. Once we do know them, we can decide for ourselves and are free from others' opinions.

    Thank you

I'm an artist, photographer and writer and have been homeless several times in my life - the last for 18 months....and while it's great to be able to get away and "create" and express for an hour or a day - how will those expressions be used to benefit the homeless directly? Will items be sold? Displayed and donations requested? Would like to know! Thanks!
