Heartwood Cohousing

Heartwood Cohousing. Durango, ColoradoHeartwood cohousing is an intentional community located in Southwest Colorado. There are 24 homes in a cluster type development.

There are about 70 acres of pasture. Currently some of the members have a total of 7 horses and 5 llamas. Down near the pasture we also have a garden area that is about 1 acre in size.

There is also a central common house, where we have functions, common meals and two guest rooms.

So what's a common meal?

We have two scheduled common meals each week. Generally 2-3 people sign up to cook that meal. A different 2-3 people will also sign up to clean. You do this about 1-2 times per month. It is a great place for the kids to get together and for the rest of us to sit and chat. You really get to know everyone this way.

Heartwood makes its decisions by consensus too. It was something that I wondered about too. It turned out to be a good move for me and I like the consensus model. It takes a longer time to get to a decision sometimes, but many times that decision is a better one than I woudl have made on my own.

My town has a coho as well. I think they do more common stuff than you describe. I thought about joining unitl I learned that they make all the community decisions by consensus. Knowing myself and some of the people who currently live there make me living there impossible. I'm just too much of a doer.

Legally it is set up as a condominium. Each person owns their own house and land. The real purpose behind the community is to choose community. I knew my neighbors hear better after 4 months than I ever knew my neighbors at my previous home. And I had lived there for 6 years.

This is a great way to get community.

What a lovely community you have. I wonder what "cohousing" means. Is it similar to "co-op" housing?
