For many years Heather has been working in to raise awareness of the potential of Web 2.0 tools. In 2007 she designed comprehensive Web 2.0 Calendar to encourage staff and students to experiment and learn about the new and emerging technologies that are reshaping the context of information on the Internet today. The objectives of this program are to encourage exploration of Web 2.0 and new technologies and to provide staff with new tools that will engage students and develop literacy skills. Work through this calendar and you will become familiar with blogging and learn about Digital Citizenship and how to make the most of the Global Teacher and Student network.

Here at Squidoo Heather runs the Pythian Games, built on the philosophy of the games which were held in Delphi, and introduces people to Lemuria, the realm that le Enchanteur presides over. She is always surprised by just how many people take the time to figure out the complex spider web she has made in cyber space.

Soul Food is Soul Food not just because of the work of Heather Blakey but thanks to the amazing community which has gathered. Meet the Soul Food Ravens who help keep the cogs turning.

Amongst other experiences Heather taught within diverse educational settings - over a thirty five year period. She is currently working for the Victorian Education Channel to establish a Global Teacher/Student Resource
The Vision
Ever since she read about the lost museum in Alexandria, Heather Blakey has been on a quest to re-establish a fragment of the 'House of the Muse' in Melbourne, Australia. The Alexandrian museum was, and remains, a beacon. No one is certain what the great institution looked like, but the Greek geographer, Strabo, describes it as part of a richly decorated complex of buildings and gardens. The whole complex was a centre of learning and research, organised into faculties, whose scholars were paid by the royal purse. The library's broader mission was to rescue Greek literature from decay. The Soul Food Cafe and Lemuria sprang from this vision.
Rummage through Heather's Bookshelves
Heather Blakey is the creator of the Soul Food Cafe and the fantasy world of Lemuria. Soul Food masks itself as a writing site but those who explore the inner corridors know that Soul Food offers so very much more. Trace Heather's reading footsteps and meet some of the talented people who have influenced her work.
Navigating Soul Food
The Soul Food Cafe is in its eighth year now. It is primarily a site to promote writing as a daily practice and it is full of tantalizing creative stimuli to tempt any writer or artist who is interested in perfecting the craft. An artist or writer can make use of Soul Food and never make contact with anyone on the site. All one needs is a visual diary or a journal to complete exercises in.
Building Niche Communities
Apart from Building Niche Communities Heather Blakey works tirelessly to spread the word and mentor individuals to ensure that they gain maximum benefit from exciting new Web 2.0 tools.
2007 AdvenTURE Calendar
For the past five years Heather Blakey has made an Advent Calendar each December. It has become a tradition and people look forward to seeing them. The 2007 AdventURE Calendar introduces people to the Web 2.0 world of Soul Food and encourages them to actively participate on the site.

Early Introduction to Soul Food
It recently occurred to me that someone landing on this page from a search engine or from a link somewhere might wonder what The Soul Food Cafe is all about, and who was behind it. I'm Heather Blakey, a secondary school teacher of writing, living in Melbourne, Australia. This network is designed to be a resource for people interested in the craft of writing who need their confidence boosted or are looking for a safe, non judgmental environment in which to write.
These days Soul Food is far more than a writing site. Today it attracts artists and writers from around the world who are eager to travel the Soul Food Silk Road and adopt the Soul Food Way.

Global Teacher - A Blogging Network

Welcome to a Virtual Community for Victorian Teachers. This is a research project in partnership between the Victorian Education Channel and the School Library Association of Victoria. This project is a result of the vision of Sandy Phillips and Mary Manning. The organisation of the network is in large part, the work of Heather Blakey who has ten years experience working in a digital environment. This brand new project takes educators in an exciting new direction.

The Magic Garden is a project designed to show educators and their students how good curriculum can be delivered and the outcomes published, using new technology such as blogs, writeboard, photo board and many other exciting applications.

Cora Zon, a professional storyteller and Heather Blakey, an experienced web publisher and webmaster of the Soul Food Cafe, work collaboratively and demonstrate how educators can marry the ancient craft of storytelling, apply current curriculum and publish using state of the art blogging software. Cora tells the enchanting Kazakha story of the 'The Magic Garden' while Heather Blakey delivers a curriculum package that climaxes with self publication on a constellation of Global Teacher, Global Student blogs. Watch, in wonder, at the way this virtual garden is growing as staff, students and the wider community contribute by responding to the activities within the Magic Garden Project.

Other Global Projects which will engage students and people of all ages include:

1. Mad Challenges and Pythian Games
2. Bridge to Lemuria
3. Bulldog Bullies
4. Places of the Heart
5. Priscilla Queen of Cyber Space
6. Aboard the Calabar - A Virtual Pirate Ship

Going where no one has gone
The challenge for educators is to rethink curriculum and move to relevant technology based curriculum. The blogger revolution is changing not only personal and global communications but thinking, technical, personal and workplace skills. For all intents and purposes blogs are static pieces of publishing software. Heather Blakey will provide a practical presentation which will inspire participants to create a blog and begin networking immediately.

Team Blogging with Heather Blakey

the creative potential of blogging

These articles by Heather Blakey reveal that blogging in a community like Soul Food or at Global Teacher reduces stress and enhances personal well-being and self esteem.
Zen and the Art of Team Blogging
"Most important of all, however, is the driving force of the manager or moderating team. Without a unifying energy a blog-group would be just a bulletin-board; with 'soul-full' guidance, it becomes a haven, womb or comfortable window-box on creation." Ken Muller
Potentiate Using Blogger
Things become what they are because of their potentialities. Teachers often speak of their students' potential, of the reality that just as an acorn in the right setting has the potential to become a mighty oak, the student has potential to excel. To grow into a mighty oak, to reach its potential, the acorn needs nourishment. It follows, therefore, that to reach their potential students need nourishment. Given the right conditions a person's creativity can soar.Clearly the Soul Food Café,(http://www.dailywriting.net) a virtual community for writers and artists, provides just the right conditions for a person's creativity to flourish. Gwen Myers, says "The worlds' oldest living organism is a grove of Aspen trees. They are each a separate tree, but they are one giant organism. Even though an individual tree may fall, the grove still flourishes. That is Soul Food to me. We are each our own tree, mature and strong enough to survive anything life may throw at us; but we all flourish and taste immortality within the Circle Of Soul Food.

A Treasury for Teachers

save time by using Soul Food prompts

Soul Food is quite literally overflowing with special projects that can be used in the classroom. The Magic Tram for example has some fabulous exercises for students of all ages

Priscilla's Secret Mission - Mastering Web 2.0

a Soul Food initiative

Priscilla set out on the first world, Soul Food Tour, , to meet and work with members of the Soul Food Community. But just as Captain Cook left England to do more than monitor the Transit of Venus, Priscilla left Australian shores with a secret mission. By her own admission she is computer illiterate, let alone Web 2.0 savvy. Priscilla is hoping that her hosts will teach her all about the web and the exciting things she can do in cyber space. Then she will be truly able to call herself Priscilla, Queen of Cyber Space.

You can learn all about Web 2.0 with Priscilla as she globe trots. She has been in the deep west of the United States and is currently in the Europe. Places she has stayed include Los Angeles, Knotts Island, North Carolina, and Apache Junction, Arizona.

"Heather introduced me to the metaphorical side of my career life and led me towards deep reflection"

Heather Blakey is a... Purveyor of Creative Stimuli

a trickster who takes the form of a raven

Many wonder just how deep Heather Blakey's a Box of Wonderment is for she continually manages to surprise by pulling out more fabulous creative stimuli. It is hard to resist the appeal of one of her mad schemes.

Heather Blakey... campaigns to populate Lemuria

Lemuria is a land of mystery. For many centuries the idea of a lost continent, having once existed in the space now occupied by the Atlantic Ocean, was expressed frequently. Generally it is now considered to be merely a legend, without any scientific foundations. However it is almost certain that at one stage there was far more land than water

The Soul Food Cafe is an on-line departure place where people from all over the world enter the safety of the Lemuria to write and make art. They do this by posting stories and other creative work on individual blogs or team-blogs. There is a niche for everyone in Lemuria- whether it be a virtual room at Riversleigh Manor, a private cell at the Hermitage for contemplation, or a noisy lounge in the Taverna di Muse. There's even the Temple of Solace where we may share real-life pain and grief. No doubt there are other places in Lemuria waiting to be discovered and explored.

All one needs to get a passport to Lemuria is the commitment to write or create on a daily basis. This is a small fare for the adventure of a lifetime.

To really learn about Lemuria, visit Heather Blakey's Lonely Planet Guide to Lemuria and the Hitch Hicker's Guide to Lemuria. Also check out Lori Gloyd's description of coming to Lemuria.

Heather Blakey is......le Enchanteur

mistress of Lemuria

le Enchanter, is Heather Blakey's alter ego and just between you and me she sometimes represents herself as the Amazon Queen and Baba Yaga. L'Enchanteur is a dazzling shape shifter who led a party of travellers through mystical doorways into the world of Lemuria. Pioneers discovered the Soul Food Silk Road and found places such as The House of the Serpents, the Lemurian Abbey, the Crest Hermitage, Duwamish Bay, the Lemurian Archipelago and the House of Baba Yaga. L' Enchanteur's energy is magnetic and somehow she brings out the very best in the creatives who follow her faithfully to new and exciting destinations. Work with le Enchanteur and you will be enchanted, not only by the development of your own creative powers, but by the personal healing that takes place. As you come to know yourself you will slay the inner critic, discover your authentic voice and name yourself. You will learn, in time, that all you need to do is holler for one of l'Enchanteur's spirit guides and you will receive the support and encouragement you need.

Heather Blakey is Lady Sibyl Riversleigh

hostess of Riversleigh Manor and Riversleigh Village

Rivesleigh Manor is a rambling old manor house. This house was once the house of Lord and Lady Riversleigh and after the death of Lord Riversleigh was inherited by Lady Sibyl Riversleigh, the youngest daughter of the Riversleigh's. It is the first port of call for pilgrims who step through Enchanteur's magic portal.

Paths lead, from Riversleigh through the Murmuring Woods to the The Hermitage and the Lemurian Abbey. Riversleigh Manor is the base home of those who have decided to come and discover the magic of Lemuria.

Heather Blakey is.... the Abbess

of the Lemurian Abbey

When she first talked about the
Lemurian Abbey , Heather talked about how she had envisioned it as a place full of fine art and craft, a virtual monastery that would be filled with tiny, spartan cells where votaries of the muse could come, retreat behind walls and observe time differently. She believed that in this Monastery, time would not be measured with clocks and believed that monastic writers would be free to wander through the cloisters and walled gardens in a meditative state, capturing metaphors in their writing nets. The Lemurian Abbey quickly became a wonderful sanctuary for people from all over the world, people eager to practice the Soul Food Way and make writing and art a daily practice.

Today The Lemurian Abbey is a divine sanctuary across the lake from the
The City of Ladies. This lake is not unlike Lake Como in Northern Italy and is home to votaries of the Soul Food Way.

The Abbess (Heather Blakey's alter ego) welcomes all comers and encourages residents to give bricks to ensure the growth of this virtual sanctuary by shopping here.

Heather Blakey is..... Ebony Wilder

housekeeper of the Abbey and legendary pirateer, Captain Ebony Wilder

When Ebony Wilder was young and bold and not so old she was the Captain of the Calabar which sailed the seven Lemurian Seas. You can join the search for Dead Man's Chest and the Elixir of Creativity here. You would be a silly sausage to miss out on all the fun and antics on board. And who knows! Johnny Depp might just show up for one of Ebony's voyages.

Joining Forces with Imogen Crest

Heather Blakey and Imogen Crest, the Lemurian Hermit, have become an artistic duo and they work together in the Soul Food Hermitage shop to present unique, soulful art work that narrates the story of Lemuria, a realm Heather founded beyond the enchanted doorway.

Imogen Crest says that nature is an ever changing process, and without it, the planet would be continually suffering. Trees protect and make homes for small creatures, shelter people and provide shade. Some people believe they have soul, and can attract you to them. Whatever you believe, they are beautiful to look at, as are most things in nature.

Heather Blakey, creator of the Lemurian realm adopts the role of illustrator and has drawn the Lemurian characters into being.

The Temple of Solace

Heather Blakey provides a safe space to find solace and keen and wail if need be.

"Living with my husband's advanced cancer for many years, and his death in January 2007, proved challenging. Advanced cancer is a term to describe a metastatic cancer and is a cancer which is unlikely to be cured.

One of the painful realities, when cancer will not go away, is that family and friends sometimes withdraw. For years I have converted the stress of 'living with cancer' to creative energy and the Soul Food Cafe is a product of that creative energy.

More recently, since the death of my husband and a sense of being abandoned, in a foreign country, The Temple of Solace has been propelled by a deep sense of loss and a desire to protect others from a similar fate.

The Temple of Solace are not just for those who are feeling isolated because of circumstances such as that which I have experienced. It is quite simply a refuge, a safe place to retreat. Visitors to the Temple may be searching for some kind words as a result of a loss of a job, a way of life, an empty nest, the loss of a teddy bear, the death of a pet, the loss of property, loss of a way of life, a lost muse, a sense of abandonment: about almost anything."

Are You A Health Worker?

do you yearn for personal care or need to replenish your well?

In a world which is now demanding more creative approaches to societal and familial problems, writing, art, psychology and aids for personal transformation are proven growth areas. Personal transformation tuition is being offered as part of everyday life and has gained more acceptance in the community.

The Soul Food Café - Global Online Daily Art and Writing - has successfully offered personal online mentoring for over the past eight years, and plans to offer this service in fascinating new ways.

Emerging global trends, accelerated by the growth of the internet medium, point to the potential for a wider range of delivery of tuition, and have opened the way for exciting approaches that can be applied globally.

It is the function of Soul Food Café to provide a service to global niche markets, though blogger networks, which provide the ideal tutorial structure to deliver this transformation.

Soul Food now offers a sanctuary, a retreat for those therapists who work in the health field. It provides a place for both them and carers to escape and offers health workers an important tool for their toolbox as they confront difficult situations.

Heather Blakey's Original 'Writing For Well Being'

Writing for Well Being
It is a well known fact that writing has a positive effect on an individuals sense of well being. Just as it was healthy for Australian pioneer women to sit and write, meditatively, to their loved ones back in the home country, so modern women can gain the benefit.
Warming the Stone Artist
The Soul Food Cafe is a quirky cyber retreat for writers. It is a compound of connecting corridors and is multi- leveled. There are sections that are undergoing extension and old parts that are being redecorated. There are windows looking out upon the secret garden and the old Hayloft studio where artists and writers alike have claimed space. This cafe is a hive of activity. It is full of the sound of voices, new voices, old voices, all chatting and laughing, sharing hints over coffee or a nourishing meal. The Soul Food Cafe fosters creativity and encourages the writer to rest, relax and bask in anticipatory pleasure. It is the perfect place to spread your writing wings and work with a muse.
Making Descansos
Traditionally Descansos (Spanish for 'place of rest') marked the place of loss. Often we pray that the one who has died will rest in peace. In truth it is those that are left behind that face the challenge of resting peacefully. This is my place of rest to mark my loss and celebrate the joy that we knew over a period spanning thirty seven years. It is my space to find peace.

Mining the Collective Unconscious

tap tapping on the chamber door

Heather Blakey is running an exciting online journey where she and participants have donned their mining hats and are mining the collective unconscious in their search for the creative grail. Their work embraces the pyschological work of people like Jung, Eliade, Gimbutus, Campbell and Estes. It is exhilarating to watch the transformation that takes place within the anathor of Soul Food.

If you are interested in working in this way simply contact Heather at heatherblakey at dailywriting dot net with an expression of interest. Make sure to use the words Mining the Collective Unconscious in your email.

Deanne Fitzpatrick grew up on a hill overlooking the water, and watching it was her pastime. "That is a natural part of life by the water," she explains. "You watch it and plan your day by the rhythms of the tides. The omnipotence of the water is clear and understood by coastal people. It is said that you should never take the water for granted because it can only be counted on to change." Deanne's rug 'The Lookout' captures the essence of what she saw.

This is fantastic, Madame l'enchanteur! I agree with Believer-- I know you do a lot of things but when you put them all in one place, it is phenomenal to look at!

I hadn't realised just how extensive your work is and how many it aims to include and benefit. This is awesome!

Heather, what an extraordinary lens. I'm aware of most of the things you do, but I've never seen them brought into such clear focus before. Knowing the power you exert on all of us in Soul Food, I can only imagine how dynamic your workshops would be. The air must crackle with creativity!
