It all started when the inventor found himself disabled to keep a regular job as a result of a stroke and brain tumor removal operation that paralyzed the left side of his body; a broken hip (right side), recent memory damaged, etc. But this is about the invention and the information given above is only to give a frame of reference to show how this invention was conceived, some people may find this interesting.
Having been born and educated in Mexico, All I wanted was a way of keeping tortillas warm; all tortilla warmers on the market just try to keep tortillas warm by using insulation, but the tortillas have little thermal mass so they do not store much heat, so I decided to keep adding heat to the tortillas but then I thought "I could get a patent" and later I thought: Why a tortilla warmer? why not a plate? Everybody in the world uses plates and everybody loves hot food (and everybody thinks that "a plate is just a plate" -Like in Casa Blanca- which makes it more challenging and hopefully more profitable), so I shifted my focus to designing a plate because the market is larger and everybody believes "a plate is only a plate" but I will also introduce to the market a coffee mug, a tortilla warmer (of course), a gravy boat and other products. In the mean time the plate is already selling through Amazon.com as Instahot 30 min plus HotSmart plate.
Research
If I tell you about it I may put you to sleep, but I will say this: I started putting antennas inside plates, using PCMs (Phase change materials) and producing a lot of smoke in the process; I finally decided to develop my own microwave absorbing material which works great; it absorbs enough microwave energy in one minute to maintain the plate still hot after 30 minutes.
How I keep the plate from breaking due to the thermal shock and how I keep the rim from getting hot for easy safe handling with the bare hands is something I will not discuss here, it is stuff mostly of interest to Engineers only.
Patenting
this is the first and last thing that I am going to patent personally; I studied and painfully obtained my own patent and I will leave my next patent to Lawyers (I am not planning on patenting anything else by the way , I am a stroke survivor and I am only doing this on behalf of a poor family... mine).
Anecdote:
One of my examiners wanted to reject my patent simply because he did not understand it (I want to believe that he was so overworked that he did not even have time to study it, which is very often the case); I told him that I was recording the phone conversation (Which I still have on tape), also threatened to complain to the Director, the Secretary of commerce, etc. I also told him that he was incompetent etc. but when he heard that I was recording his tone changed and I just had to let him save face, he demanded something, I accepted (I should not have because it was unfair) but it was my second office action and was final. Anyway, I got my patent.
NOTE: For the people unfamiliar with the patenting process; dealing with the USPTO (Patent Office) is not like Baseball, two strikes and you are out, this means you get two office actions and the second is final and since the first office action is always negative (Otherwise the Examiner would not be considered having done his job) that's strike one guaranteed. In my particular case the examiner argued that my invention was similar to other inventions that were not even "microwaveable" (I patented a "Microwaveable heat storage device"). I was furious but you have to be very humble with those examiners; they have a lot of power and It was only when he said "strike two" (Remember that that means OUT at the USPTO field and they are the "umpires" not players) that I turned into a "cornered cat", not brave, simply scared.
Developing the product, marketing and sales
The HotSmart plate is already on the market through Amazon.com (Just type: HotSmart) and this is part of the marketing process; the Internet, Google, twitter, Amazon.com etc. have changed so much the rules that I may write about it later if I find out that there is at least a little interest from people about reading this notes. People will be interested only if they see me making lots of money so my future will probably not be as a writer; I say that because when that happens why write? (not because the product is not selling, it is selling and I am getting great feedback from my early adopters).
By the way, the plate is already selling all over the USA, including Florida which of course is not a cold place but I know It will sell great in the Northern states and Canada as soon as they get the word.
How to lose weight by eating slowly
Eating slowly prevents overeating, obesity and helps lose weight
You can Google "eating slowly" and you will find lots of information on the subject but nobody tells you that your food will get cold, eating slowly will become an unpleasant experience you will never acquire the habit and you will probably fail.

The plate is wonderful, it does the job just as advertised. The plate comes with instructions on recommended microwave time for the wattage of the microwave. My microwave is 1100 watts so I heated the plate for 1 minute, it was able to keep the food warm for over 45 minutes. A family member is a very slow eater (due to medical problems each meal takes a little over an hour not including dessert) and this plate was able to keep the food warm the entire time. Initially, I was looking for a metal platter/wood tray combo that restaurants use to serve fajitas or steaks to help keep food warm. I saw this and thought I would try it out; I am very glad I did. I think it is much better than the "sizzler" plates since:
1) it keeps food warm for a longer period of time.
2) it can be washed in dishwasher (some metal plates have to be hand-washed).
3) takes up less room in cabinet, do not have the hassle of metal plate and protective outer wood/plastic plate.
4) safer than metal plate since rim of this plate is safe to touch if you follow the instructions.
Plus, it is very pretty and neutral in design so fits with any decor. The only potential down side is that the plate is a little heavy, however, it is still lighter than the metal platter/protective tray combo. I am very impressed with this product and recommend it to everyone who likes their food hot. As I said, buy it and you won't be disappointed.
