Heavy metal (often referred to simply as metal) is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in England and the United States. With roots in blues-rock and psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness. Heavy metal lyrics and performance styles are generally associated with machismo and masculine sexuality.

The New Wave of British Heavy Metal (frequently abbreviated as NWOBHM) is a heavy metal movement that started in the late 1970s, in Britain, and achieved some international attention by the early 1980s. The era developed as a reaction in part to the decline of early heavy metal bands such as Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. NWOBHM bands toned down the blues influences of earlier acts, incorporated elements of punk, increased the tempo, and adopted a "tougher" sound, taking a harder approach to its music. It was a scene directed almost exclusively at heavy metal fans. The era is considered to be a major foundation stone for the extreme metal genres with acts such as Metallica citing NWOBHM bands like Saxon, Diamond Head, Motörhead and Iron Maiden as a major influence on their musical style. ...

    aw. Im a heavy metal guitarist. a lot of hard work gos into learning them chords and guitar solos. metal can be both heavy and light for myself. I really enjoyed this lens alot ;)

    heavy metal is not bad but continuously listening to their jams will give you tinnitus. i love ac/dc but can't remember their best song.

    This is really interesting. If someone had asked whether I like heavy metal, not sure I'd have said yes - but I see a lot of bands here that I have always liked. Guess I learned something today! :)
