A "Heavy Duty" Sewing Machine Review

Ranked #7,385 in Hobbies, Games & Toys, #94,603 overall

Are You In Need of a Heavy Duty or Commerical Sewing Machine?

If you have a big job to do and need a heavy duty sewing machine, you'll need to find a commercial sewing machine, which tend to be larger and heavier than many popular featherweight models. However, that does not mean you need to expect to spend a lot of money on your purchase. Heavy duty sewing machines used to retail in the thousands of dollars, however you can now find models for only a few hundred. Your options have also greatly improved, and because of this, we wanted to offer a commercial or heavy duty sewing machine review.

When you compare sewing machines, it is important to look not only at their price but at other features as well. You should consider options like the type or design, performance, threading, brand, and user reviews. While we know the Singer 7470 Confidence Electronic Sewing Machine is used in instructional settings and is perfect for quilting, does that not give us an idea on it's performance or what users think of it. This is why we wanted to offer you an in depth sewing machine comparison of 5 of Amazon's best selling commercial sewing machines.

What Does the Singer 7470 Confidence Sewing Machine Have To Offer You?

We know those at HSN (The Home Shopping Network) love it, but will it meet your needs?

The Singer Confidence 7470 takes the best features of many sewing machines and pools them into one. Push button technology lets you choose one of 173 pre-programmed stitches including among them including a Hand-Look Quilt Stitch (designed to look like hand sewing for topstitching or quilting, particularly of value to quilters, crafters and heirloom seamstresses). It arrives with a built-in monogram allowing you to easily monogram your creations and features a hand Automatic Tie-Off Function to reinforce the start and end of seams for stronger stitching.

What do users think of this machine:

"I am a sewing novice... I'm really learning how to do it through quilting and sewing classes.

Pros:
  • Auto tension! I love it. It works every time.
  • Drop in bobbin! I will never go back.
  • Easy to select stitches (However, do read the manual before doing twin needle work!)
  • Lots of choices for embellishing items with embroidery.
  • So far, no issues and I've sewn heavy and light fabrics.
Cons:
  • The auto-threader takes more work than doing it myself.
  • You will need another light source if you like to sew at night.
I don't like that to reverse stitch I have to hold the button at the same time I guide my fabric. Couldn't they just let me press the button, then press the button again when I'm done with reverse? (That's not novice friendly!)"

"The instruction manual is sufficient in its definitions, descriptions, and photos ... enough to make sense. The included accessories with the "Confidence" are valuable. With so many sewing machines on the market, it becomes overwhelming to know which machine to choose. I based my decision largely on consumer reviews (as well as a recommendation from several staff members at a retail store). As of now, I couldn't be happier with my decision.

NOTES:
As another reviewer notes, the machine is a bit heavy to carry around... It is noted that Class 15J bobbins must be used. I have used Class 15 with no problems; but have since decided (per further recommendation) to only use Class 15J bobbins. Can't find these everywhere. I found them at several online retailers, as well as Ebay and Singerco."

Even one of the less positive reviews we've found stated that the Singer Confidence it "is a versatile machine". With it's sleek, user friendly design, computerized functions, and Singer's limited 25 year warranty, we're sure you'll love your purchase.
