Metallica Master of Puppets Poster

If someone were to ask you to bring them the greatest thrash metal album of all time, you would hand deliver a copy of Master of Puppets. The anthems are big (Master of Puppets), the instrumentals are dark and brooding (Orion), and the album takes off like a bat out of hell right from the very first track (Battery). The album really showcases the talents of Cliff Burton, the bassist at the time, as well. Sadly, he perished in 1986, but his music lives on to this day.

One of the founding fathers of today's heavy metal, Judas Priest has a phenomenal back catalog of heavy hits. Modern bands like Godsmack, Metallica, and Megadeth have all cited Judas Priest as a heavy influence on their own work. The poster seen here is from the 1990 album Pain Killer, which was their most acclaimed album in a decade. The cover artwork is a Judas Priest original, featuring a "metal messiah sent to the world to destroy evil and rescue mankind from destruction."

Ozzy Osbourne, aka the Prince of Darkness, is one of the founding fathers of heavy metal. With roots in the industrialized city of Birmingham, England, Ozzy began his career with the heavy metal originators, Black Sabbath. In 1980, he released his first solo album after being released from the band for drug and alcohol abuse, but bounced back with huge success with his debut. Ozzy is known for his wild on stage antics, from biting the head off a dove, to biting the head off a bat, his reality TV series, The Osbournes, and most importantly, his music. Songs like "Crazy Train," "Over the Mountain," "Mr. Crowley," and "No More Tears" are Ozzy classics that have cemented a place in rock with Ozzy's name written all over it.

It's actually a good thing that Dave Mustaine, singer, guitarist, and founding member of Megadeth, was kicked out of Metallica in the early 80's. If he had still been in the band, we would never have been able to hear the great music of one of thrash metal's first bands, Megadeth. You may know their radio hits "Trust," "Sweating Bullets," "Symphony of Destruction," and a few more, but the band's catalog of music is really astounding. Comparisons between Megadeth and Metallica from fans and the media are endless, but the one truth remains: Megadeth remains as heavy and unstoppable as they ever have been. This poster features the band's official mascot, Vic Rattlehead, and some war rattled artwork.

Iron Maiden have sold over 100 million records in spite of their lack of radio airplay, exposure from MTV, or publicity. The band has largely relied on word of mouth for their continued success. Of all of their songs, you might be familiar with "Run to the Hills," and as for imagery, you have probably seen their mascot Eddie on t-shirts, album covers, and posters. The poster here features Eddie from the "The Trooper" single, as he holds a tattered Union Jack flag over a pile of human remains (as the Grim Reaper lurks in the background). Iron Maiden are one of the Godfathers of heavy metal, with a classical metal style that has influenced bands like Metallica, Avenged Sevenfold, and Dream Theater.

Linkin Park is one of the biggest bands to emerge from the 2000's rock scene, with their debut album, The Hybrid Theory, selling millions of copies in just its first year (making it the best selling album of the year). Now a rock radio mainstay, Linkin Park is here to stay with hits like "One Step Closer," "In the End," "Crawling," "Bleed it Out," and "Numb." They are also one of the few bands to make out of the late 90's/early 2000's nu metal scene with their head held high.

As one of the leading heavy metal acts of the 2000's and beyond, Disturbed features dark lyrics, sinister sounding guitars, and real metal anthems on all of their albums. Songs like "Down with the Sickness," "Stupify," "Indestructible," "Another Way to Die," and "Stricken." They are considered one of the most successful metal acts in the post grunge era, headlining the Mayhem Festival and several of their own festivals. The mascot that you see on this poster for their 2010 album Asylum is "The Guy," a very cool, dark figure appearing somewhere on all of their albums and in videos.

Formed in 1981 in Huntington Park, California, Slayer is one of the thrash metal pioneers that introduced a sound that is unlike any other in rock. Slayer uses downtuned rhythms, graphic lyrics, and innovation in using the double bass pedal, which set the standard for other metal artists. The band's most well known releases include "South of Heaven," "Seasons of the Abyss," and their most popular, "Reign in Blood."

At the height of the alternative rock scene in the 90's, everything from Hootie and the Blowfish to White Zombie was being labeled as alternative. Once the dust settled, people realized White Zombie wasn't an alternative band at all, they were heavy metal. While the band had a successful career in music culminating with 2005's Astro Creep 2000. The band is described as being mostly a science fiction fantasy band, with lyrics dominated by horror movie content. Singer Rob Zombie has also had a successful solo career, and has gone onto film making (Halloween, Devil's Rejects).

Like Alice Cooper and other "shock artists" that preceded him, Marilyn Manson relies on stage shock and awe to wow audiences. That doesn't mean his music is lagging by any means. "The Beautiful People" is not only one of the heaviest industrial songs to come out of the 90's, but also one of the freakiest videos you'll ever see. Manson still has scars on the insides of his mouth from some of the strange devices he wore in the video to this day.

As the former guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne, Zakk Wylde was taught by Ozzy himself on how to sing. His guitar training, however, was by his own virtue. Follow the Leader is one of Korn's most well known and successful albums. Two of the singles, "Got the Life" and "Freak on a Leash," received major airplay on MTV and rock radio. When the album dropped in 1998, Korn had already two nu metal albums under their belt, but none had received the critical and fanbase attention that Follow the Leader experienced. With the unique album cover art by the creator of Spawn, Todd McFarlane, a new, mainstream sound blending punk rock, Industrial, heavy metal, and alternative metal all into one unique sound. Subsequent albums played off of this new sound throughout the 2000's.

Metallica ... And Justice For All Poster

After the unfortunate death of bassist Cliff Burton, the band had something to prove. They kicked out founding member Mustaine, replaced him Kirk Hammett, and found Cliff Burton, only to lose him years later. With his new replacement on board, Jason Newsted, the band reclaimed their place as the kings of all trash metal with the 1988 release of ...And Justice For All. It contains the song "One," which is one of their heaviest and influential, as well as "Blackened," "Harvester of Sorrow," and "Shortest Straw." The album was their biggest hit to date, until their massive 1991 self titled release, more commonly known as "the Black Album."

As the 90's approached, heavy metal wasn't the most popular form of rock n' roll any longer. Alternative and grunge bands like Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, and Pearl Jam led the rock scene. However, there was still room for a heavy metal band in this new rock landscape. Pantera flourished in times when grunge was at its peak. Songs like "Walk," "Drag the Waters," and "This Love" all received rock radio airplay. Along with grunge music, Pantera's groove based metal was a trigger for ending the glam metal scene of the 80's. Though Dimebag Darrell was tragically murdered by a fan in 2004, the band's legacy lives on in the world of metal.
