Find Hedge Fund Job

We don't think the strategy for finding a hedge fund job in today's downsized market should be any different from three or four years ago, other than the need to be more aggressive across the board in your search process.

And, you need to cast a wide net to find a Hedge Fund Job that includes all contacts, potential posting opportunities including intelligent comments via social media sites and even friends or family.

Hedge fund jobs and/or the private equity industry will always be a business that is challenging to get into - it's not easy to just walk in the door and expect to get an interview and a job quickly. This rarely happens! There are barriers to entry, as these jobs are very lucrative and sought after.

We believe the market is contracting, which is impacting the number of quality hedge fund jobs available to graduates. As many firms have cut back on the number of associate positions that may eventually lead to a general partner slot (assuming this is your ultimate goal).

Competition is increasing and you must market yourself even harder and/or leverage your graduate school, family and any network of contacts to get your proverbial foot in the door for a hedge fund job. Your job hunting strategy needs to be comprehensive and well thought out across the board, as the barriers to entry are high.

You may want to consider augmenting your standard search process (networking with peers, job boards, etc.) with direct contact with an Associate within the Hedge Fund firm that you are interested in joining. Be as targeted as you possibly can, as these associates can give you valuable insight as how to follow in their footsteps to get a hedge fund job with the firm you are targeting.

Ask pointed questions about topics like how they got their 'in' with their hedge fund firm, the nuts and bolts of what they do on a daily basis, and the skills that you would need to build to get your foot in the door. They have extremely valuable experience and insight that can help you get a much better perspective on how to target the PE firm for a job.

But, you have to be very careful when approaching the associate for the obvious reasons (they may see you as competition comes to mind!) If contact is done properly you might also get invited to a social gathering where associates and general partners mingle. You don't want to be too pushy at this type of an event - but be aggressive enough when/where you can to let the firm know where your interests lie.

Do your homework on any Hedge Fund or Private Equity firm that you are targeting. Meaning, you need to have an intimate understanding of their firm, their client focus (if any), the managing partner and/or general partner's interests, business acumen, etc. This knowledge will server you well when you get your first interview for a hedge fund job.
