Heelys - The Shoes with Wheels in the Heel

Ranked #26,433 in Sports & Recreation, #632,066 overall

What Are Heelys?

Heelys or Heelies as they are sometimes known, are normal sneakers (trainers if you live in the UK) with a difference. A wheel is embedded in the heel of the shoe and are very cool.

The wearer can run and walk as normal or by shifting their weight to their heels, roll. Just watch those heads turn as you cruise down the street!

The wheel can be easily removed from the shoes if required. Heelys Stockists

Getting Started

1. Ensure wheels are completely engaged before starting.
2. Hold onto a rail, counter of friend to keep your balance.
3. Put one foot in front of the other (never side by side).
4. Find out which foot you feel most comfortable with in front. This is usually your stronger leg.
5. Keep hold of the rail, counter or friend and lift up your toes.
6. Balancing on your wheels, pull yourself along.
7. If you lose your balance, put your toes down.
8. Once you are comfortable balancing, you're ready to learn how to heel.

How To Heel

Starting
1. Take a normal step forward with what used to be your 'back' foot.
2. Take a second step forward with your other foot, and plant the wheel (toe up).
3. Kick or push off with your foot that's at the back.
4. Raise your back toe with your weight balanced on the wheel.
5. Roll and place your back foot directly behind your front foot (toes on both feet should be raised up).

Stopping
Soft Brake: To stop using the soft brake method, lift the toes of your back foot up a bit higher in order to drag the heel portion of the shoe along the ground to gradually slow your speed until you come to a complete stop.
Hard Brake: To stop using the hard brake method, simply transfer your weight to your forefoot (on both feet) and 'jog' or 'run' out of your roll.

That's all there is to it - enjoy your Heelys! Heelys Stockists

I Want A Pair Of Those

I knew as soon as we arrived in Orlando, Florida that I was in for a hard time.
We collected our luggage and were heading towards our rented car when it started. 'Look' cried Kelly, our 11 year old daughter, 'how does she do that?'. A young girl around 10 years old nonchalantly glided past at considerable speed. 'That's really cool, I want a pair of those'. From that moment onwards we never had a chance.

We arrived at our hotel in the early evening and after unpacking decided to go for stroll to find somewhere to eat. They were everywhere - not restaurants, but those darned shoes with wheels. Kelly watched in amazement as kids skated down the street as if they were born with wheels in their heels.

Bright and early next morning, we headed for Epcot. First stop was the show 'Honey, I Shrunk The Audience'. On exiting the auditorium we were confronted by a ramp. You've guessed it - kids were skating down the ramp on their Heelys. 'Can I have a pair of those?' asked Kelly hopefully. I tried to divert her attention by telling her the next attraction was a talking turtle! In hindsight it might not have been the best tactic but it was all I could think of at the time.

Next day we visited Magic Kingdom. What a place. Thunder Mountain, Splash Mountain, Space Mountain and our stress mountin'. Everywhere we went it was the same. 'Cool Dudes' gliding along with Kelly gaping in awe and nagging us to buy her a pair. Read Full Story
