Helen Mirren - One of Britain's Best

Helen Mirren is one of the finest British actresses.

She has had a long and distinguished career (her filmography is so long I've put it at the bottom of the page!).  She is also well know for appearing in movies where she has to (at least partially) undress for her art.  I think this is more related to her attraction for "edgier" projects rather than a sub-concious need to flash.

She has had a marvellous year lately, with her oscar and the many other awards she has received for The Queen, Elizabeth and Prime Suspect.

Helen Mirren Quotes

"Actors are rogues and vagabonds. Or they ought to be. "

"All you have to do is to look like crap on film and everyone thinks you're a brilliant actress. Actually, all you've done is look like crap."

"Flesh sells. People don't want to see pictures of churches. They want to see naked bodies."

"It's great to be queen!"

"It's never been confirmed that Elizabeth I was a virgin. It's like the Virgin Mary - it's about branding, a logo. To use a modern term, Elizabeth was actually a bit of a slut."

Review of The Queen

Author: Kevin L. Powers

Having previously directed DIRTY PRETTY THINGS and MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS Stephen Frears is again in top form with his new film THE QUEEN who toplines Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth II and tells the story during the year in which Princess Diana was killed in an automobile accident presumably by fault of the paparazzi.

The story is less about the tragedy of Princess Diana and more about the effects it had on the Royal family and the Royal family's reaction to the tragic event and how the whole debacle influenced an entire nation and in parts the international world. Presenting "the peoples'" outlook on the whole incident is newly elected Prime Minister Tony Blair (Michael Sheen) who must both balance the traditional expectations of the Royal family with those of a more modern public who doesn't adhere to the established traditions.

Writer Peter Morgan nicely contrasts the Royal family's "life" with those of her people not only through actual and re-created footage of the time but also with Blair who is caught in the middle between the Queen's stubborn adherence to a archaic governmental system and the outcry of the public (especially through his relationship with his wife).

Mirren is phenomenal as the Queen as if she was born into the role. Sheen also does an amazing job being the only person with enough balls to stand up to the Queen of England in order to help her see "the light." THE QUEEN is one of the few films that make you truly believe that you are watching what really goes on behind closed doors in the Royal home.

The Queen

Winner of the Academy Award® for Best Actress, Dame Helen Mirren gives a spellbinding performance in THE QUEEN, the provocative story behind one of the most public tragedies of our time - the sudden death of Princess Diana. In the wake of Diana's death, the very private and tradition-bound Queen Elizabeth II (Mirren) finds herself in conflict with the new Prime Minister, the slickly modern and image-conscious Tony Blair. THE QUEEN, also starring Academy Award® Nominee James Cromwell (Best Supporting Actor, BABE, 1995), takes you inside the private chambers of the Royal Family and the British government for a captivating look at a vulnerable human being in her darkest hour, as a nation grieving for its People's Princess waits to see what its leaders will do. Suspenseful, heartfelt and riveting, it's a fascinating story you won't soon forget.
