The Queen

Helen Mirren: Academy Award Best Actress, BAFTA Award Best Actress, Golden Globe Award Best Actress, Screen Actors Guild Award Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor

Helen Mirren takes on the delicate task of portraying on film someone who is still alive. That person also happens to be the queen of her country and the person who bestowed on Helen the title of "Dame" in 2003.

Yet, Helen Mirren steps seemingly effortlessly into Her Majesty's skin and recreates a painful period in history, covering the controversial death of the former Princess of Wales.

Who is Helen Mirren?

Ilyena Vasilievna Mironov was born in England on 26 July 1945, to Vasily and Kathleen Mironov. In the 1950s, during the cold war, Vasily anglicised his family by changing his name to Basil, and his family's surname to Mirren. Presumably, Ilyena also became "Helen" at this time.

Mirren began her acting career playing Cleopatra in a National Youth Theatre production. She then joined the prestigious and demanding Royal Shakespeare Company.

Helen has acted in close on 100 films and TV shows, including The Mosquito Coast, Some Mother's Son, The Madness of King George, and Gosford Park, on top of her signature role on Prime Suspect.

This year, Helen is scheduled to portray Elinor Loredan in the film version of Cornelia Funk's acclaimed children's book Inkheart.

Helen's Oscar Acceptance Speech

"I've got my purse in one hand, my earring in the other. Thank you, Academy. Thank you so much. Huge honor. You know, my sister told me that all kids love to get gold stars, and this is the biggest and the best gold star that I have ever had in my life. I want to share my gold star with my fellow nominees, those brilliant, brilliant actresses who gave such amazing performances this year. I also share my gold star with the filmmakers, with Stephen Frears, with Peter Morgan, with Andy Harries and all the producers and all the filmmakers and the cast. Thank you.

Now you know for 50 years and more, Elizabeth Windsor has maintained her dignity, her sense of duty, and her hairstyle. She's had her feet planted firmly on the ground, her hat on her head, her handbag on her arm and she's weathered many, many storms, and I salute her courage and her consistency. And I thank her because if it wasn't for her, I most, most certainly would not be here. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you The Queen. Thank you. Thank you very much."
