Overview of the Lost Gardens of Heligan
article from Wikipedia
The Lost Gardens of Heligan, near Mevagissey in the Duchy of Cornwall, are one of the most popular botanical gardens in the UK. The style of the gardens is typical of the nineteenth century Gardenesque style, with areas of different character and in different design styles.
The gardens were created by members of the Cornish Tremayne family, over a period from the mid-18th century up to the beginning of the 20th century, and still form part of the family's Heligan estate. The gardens were neglected after the First World War, and only restored in the 1990s, a restoration that was the subject of several popular television programs and books.
The gardens now boast a fabulous collection of aged and colossal rhododendrons and camellias, a series of lakes fed by a ram pump over a century in age, highly productive flower and vegetable gardens, an Italian garden, and a stunning wild area filled with primaeval-looking sub-tropical tree ferns called "The Jungle". The gardens also have Europe's only remaining pineapple pit, warmed by rotting manure, and two figures made from rocks and plants known as the Mud Maid and the Giants Head.
The place-name, properly pronounced h'LIG'n',and not the commonly heard 'HEL-i-gun', is derived from the Cornish word , 'willow tree'.

BOOKS: About The Lost Gardens of Heligan
The Lost Gardens of Heligan
Until World War I, the estate gardens of Heligan were one of the glories of Cornwall. This book tells the story of the restoration of these gardens after 70 years of neglect, against the backdrop of local opposition and a lack of funding.
Heligan: A Portrait of the Lost Gardens
Enjoy a spectacular visual tour of the private gardens at Heligan Manor in Cornwall, site of Europe's largest garden restoration and the gardens voted England's best by viewers of BBC "Gardener's World." Breathtaking full-color photographs, historic images, and engaging text capture the romance of this spectacular landscape which fell into decay after World War I and has now been returned to its former glory. Take a leisurely "stroll" through Heligan's lush flower, vegetable, alpine, and Italian gardens; its vinery; its many wonderful buildings, including a woodworking barn and mill; bird sanctuary; and farm.
The Kitchen Gardens at Heligan: Lost Gardening Principles Rediscovered
The Lost Gardens at Heligan sold more than 200,000 copies-and this new look at Britain's most beloved garden examines one of its chief glories.
Originally created to make the house they served self-sufficient, the still-productive kitchen gardens have since undergone a complete restoration under the guidance of Tom Petherick. He, with the help of a leading garden photographer, reveals how he went about his work, and how best to keep flowers, fruit, and vegetables: the entire output of a good garden. Packed with advice, hints, tips, and professional secrets, it is a must-have for any gardener.
The Heligan Vegetable Bible
Old varieties of vegetables, saved by enthusiasts from the onslaughts of supermarkets and the EU grow at Heligan. This book shows how to grow them and how to make the best of them on the table.
Heligan: Fruit,Flowers and Herbs
"Heligan: Fruit, Flowers and Herbs" celebrates the abundance of the award-winning productive gardens at the Lost Gardens of Heligan. With derelict structures restored to working order, the range of traditional crops now cultivated and harvested by hand is beginning to reflect the output of the gardens in their late Victorian heyday.
This book tells the stories of reconstruction behind increasingly well-known features - the beautiful apple arches in the Vegetable Garden, the unique pineapple pit in the Melon Yard and the historically significant Paxton House in the Flower Garden. It conveys the central value - and character - of a committed and hard-working garden team, whose expertise increases as the seasons pass.
Meeting a broad range of horticultural challenges, they nurture crops to exceptional beauty, scent and flavour - from the delicate early narcissi and jewel-like peach blossom (hand-pollinated to secure trugs of perfect, succulent fruits in season), to the massive borders of tall, crazy, colourful antirrhinums, which delight visitors at the height of Summer; from unarguably the best-flavoured Royal Sovereign strawberries and succulent melons cradled to ripeness in their hand-knotted nets, to the last harvest home - anemones for Christmas. "Heligan: Fruit, Flowers and Herbs" is a mine of practical information as well as a visual feast.
