Hellblazer Graphic Novels - The 10 Best Hellblazer Stories
For anyone who isn't familiar with the series, John Constantine is a tough as nails practitioner of magic who uses his skills to help others (and occasionally himself) by delving into places where mortals shouldn't delve. The fact that this comic is Vertigo's longest running title makes many Hellblazer graphic novels must-read material and if you discovered Mr. Constantine through the movie, then you're in for a real treat - the comic book is much better. Below you'll find my favorite stories from the series (in no particular order) and various other related thoughts. I hope you find something you like.

Graphic Novels Or Comic Books?
A Clever Way To Cure Cancer
If you've got the balls to try it.
John Constantine, Hellblazer: Dangerous Habits
Amazon Price: $25.91 (as of 05/31/2012)![]()
If someone I know wants to get familiar with John Constantine, this is the book that I always recommend first. It showcases all of the character's good points and reaches a level of depth few other comic series can even hope to achieve.
Why I Don't Want To Go To Prison
And what I should do if I find myself in one.
Hellblazer: Hard Time (John Constantine, Hellblazer)
Amazon Price: $19.98 (as of 05/31/2012)![]()
If you liked the old TV show "Oz" then you'll enjoy this particular Hellblazer graphic novel. It's definitely a bit tongue-and-cheek, but the story is solid and entertaining.
John Constantine, Hellblazer - Vol. 1: Original Sins (2011)
When looking at Hellblazer graphic novels, why not start with the beginning?

This Hellblazer graphic novel collects issues #1-9 and issues 76-77 of Swamp Thing which continues the story at the end of number 9. Be sure and read the details or ask your local comic book store owner for this particular version as there are some that don't have the two Swamp Thing issues. These early stories help develop the character and lay the groundwork for a long time to come.
John Constantine, Hellblazer, Vol. 1: Original Sins
There Are Risks For Those Who Dabble In Magic
Insanity is one.
Hellblazer: The Devil You Know
Amazon Price: $19.99 (as of 05/31/2012)![]()
I'll be honest with you, the only reason I bought this volume is because it had some previously unpublished material as DC didn't really collect individual stories early on. A strong buy, in my opinion, for the Newcastle story alone.
Hellblazer Comic Books Over At eBay
Sharing Memories
And spending time with family.
John Constantine, Hellblazer: Red Sepulchre
Amazon Price: $6.40 (as of 05/31/2012)![]()
For those of you turned off by some of Azarello's stories, you'll be glad to hear that Mike Carey takes the character back to the cerebral horror feel that you often found in earlier issues by Ennis and Delano.
Detective Work Is A Lot Easier
When you can use a little magic.
Hellblazer: Haunted
Amazon Price: $15.98 (as of 05/31/2012)![]()
This is the best work by Ellis on the series, period. I actually like seeing John as more of detective every once in a while. Solid art which fits perfectly with a solid story makes this volume one you should try out at some point.
Garth Ennis Hellblazer Interview
Another New Disease To Worry About
John Constantine at his best.
John Constantine, Hellblazer: All His Engines
Amazon Price: $7.67 (as of 05/31/2012)![]()
Hellblazer fans will get a solid stand-alone story with incredible mood-filled artwork and some resource information about the character and his creation by Alan Moore.
Some Humans Are Just Plain Evil
Even more so than some demons.
Hellblazer: Family Man
Amazon Price: $33.65 (as of 05/31/2012)![]()
No supernatural demons to deal with here, only human ones. The only complaint I have is that there is no one artist that does all of the stories, but it is similar enough not to be too noticeable.
Facing the Devil
Again.
John Constantine, Hellblazer: Rake at the Gates of Hell
Amazon Price: $53.50 (as of 05/31/2012)![]()
I have only a minor complaint. I wish Ennis would have taken another issue or two to draw things out a little bit better. I have to wonder if he was under some sort of deadline as some of it feels rushed.

Great Stories Finally Collected
This one belongs on your shelf along with the other Hellblazer graphic novels.
John Constantine, Hellblazer: Rare Cuts
Amazon Price: $14.99 (as of 05/31/2012)![]()
I know that the Newcastle story appears in another volume, but this collection is worth buying because many of these stories are collected no where else. I just wish they would have included the Neil Gaiman issue (#27 "Hold Me").

- I became a fan of John Constantine the first time I saw him in Swampie. If I had to recommend one Hellblazer graphic novel (a collection of comic book issues) I would have to pick Dangerous Habits. It is without a doubt the best story you've got listed in my opinion. My opinion of the film is so so. It could have been so much better.

- Interesting Lens! You make the Hellblazer novels sound like so much fun. Am a little afraid though, that they may scare me a lot as well as give me goosebumps for weeks.
