A Brief History Lesson on Hello Kitty.

Hello Kitty was created by the Sanrio company in 1974 by Yuko Shimizu. She first appeared on a coin purse in Japan in 1975. Just a year later, in 1976, she made her debut in the U.S. In 2011, Hello Kitty turned 37!
A spokesperson for Sanrio says that Hello Kitty is not normally given a mouth because "without the mouth, it is easier for the person looking at Hello Kitty to project their feelings onto the character" and that "the person can be happy or sad together with Hello Kitty."
Hello Kitty was given an English name (Kitty White) because British culture was popular with Japanese girls when she was created.
Kitty's name came from one of the cats that Alice kept in the book Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll. When Hello Kitty's boyfriend "Dear Daniel", was created in 1999, designers took his name from the 1971 film, Melody, which starred Mark Lester as a character called Daniel and features songs by the Bee Gees.

Hello Kitty theme restaurant attracts crowds

Updated: 2011-12-28 15:03
By Guo Nei (China Daily)
China's first Kitty restaurant attracts more than it can seat
BEIJING - China's first Hello Kitty theme restaurant was launched recently in the capital. It's so crowded at all times that it's advisable to call ahead and reserve a spot before reaching the venue.

Expectedly, it's all pink and sweet inside the restaurant, authorized by the Japanese parent company Sanrio. The tablecloth is pink, as are the chairs, ceiling and floor, even the lamp light shines soft and rosy.
Waiters are in white shirts with a red bow and blue rompers, while waitresses wear pink dresses.
The whole restaurant is designed like a dining room in a fairy tale. A Christmas tree stands in the middle of the room, surrounded with Kitty balloons - a favored spot for taking pictures in the restaurant.
Dining at Hello Kitty Dreams Restaurant, which opened on Dec 23 at Sanlitun Village shopping zone in Beijing, costs 160 yuan ($25) on average per person. Sanlitun Village is regarded as one of the city's most charming areas, lined with bars and international brand-name stores.
Duan Yahui, a 21-year-old woman from East China's Shandong province, celebrated her birthday with her boyfriend at the restaurant.
"I was so happy to celebrate my birthday at the Kitty theme restaurant," she said. "It's like being in Disneyland."
Duan was very satisfied with the food, and showed off her Kitty-shaped birthday chocolate, sent by the restaurant.
"It's too cute to eat," she laughed. "My friends in my hometown who also love Kitty are jealous about my experience," she joked. "I will bring them here when they visit me during the Spring Festival."
Duan was lucky to get a spot by calling for reservation weeks ago. But other fans weren't as lucky.
Han Yang and her friend were stopped at the entrance on Christmas Day.
"I came particularly to have a Christmas brunch with my friend," said Han, staff member at China Mobile Limited Company, who drove all the way from the fringes of the city with a friend but was unable to get in, not having a reservation.
"I understand its popularity since it's the first Kitty theme restaurant in China," she said and booked for lunch on Jan 3.
Hello Kitty is a Japanese cartoon character that has thousands of fans all over the world. Kitty has been portrayed as a white girl cat with a pink bow and been widely accepted and loved in Asia since it was created. It's now a big global brand. Kitty
The first 10 customers are admitted without reservation during afternoon teatime, according to Sarah Wang, CEO of the restaurant. But it's obviously not enough.
The restaurant's hotline (010-84059021) is busy at all times. Wang said they applied for more hotlines to ensure greater convenience to customers.
Although the restaurant could accommodate 100 customers, Wang reserved a table against each order during the trial run to maintain high-quality service.
Wang is not keen to open a chain of restaurants, in spite of the overwhelming success of the pilot outlet.
"It's my first time in gourmet business and I wish to go about it carefully," Wang said.
Luo Wangshu contributed to this story.

Hello Kitty Christmas - The Perfect Expression of the Season's Goodwill Message
For many Hello Kitty enthusiasts the main draw of the feline character is her utter cuteness - it's a simple emotion that catches them when they first fall in love with her. Her appeal is particularly enchanting to younger girls, who connect instantly with the simple style in which she is drawn - her cute large, rounded face, with button eyes, nose and three fine whiskers on either side are exactly how a six-year-old might draw a cat. But there is more to Hello Kitty's cuteness than simply a cartoon style.
The Hello Kitty brand, created in Japan and now a global success for over 35 years, is a key character in the Japanese kawaii cultural tradition that came into focus in the 1970s. The word kawaii literally means adorable, precious, lovable, or innocent. It is this sense of innocence and purity of heart that Hello Kitty represents, and it is the simple goodness of the Hello Kitty character that makes identifying with her an excellent role model for young girls, chiming in with the Christmas season's message of peace and goodwill to all.
Always a part of Hello Kitty's character (if you research her official character profile she is described as a bright and kind-hearted girl whose favourite word is friendship), the goodwill message is now so strongly associated with Hello Kitty that she has become both a United States children's ambassador for Unicef and the official tourism ambassador to China and Hong Kong!
So, introducing a child to the Hello Kitty brand at Christmas couldn't be more ideal. And as the company who developed the brand, Sanrio, have extended licensing arrangements to hundreds of manufacturers across the globe - you can find pretty much every kind of Hello Kitty product imaginable! And at Christmas time you are likely to find extra merchandise aimed at the holiday season: there are Hello Kitty Christmas lights and tree ornaments, Hello Kitty Christmas mug, biscuit and cocoa gift sets, Hello Kitty Christmas stockings, books and DVDs, and even Hello Kitty Christmas edition Ty Beanie Babies, complete with Santa hat and candy canes!
My favorite has got to be the Hello Kitty & Friends Holiday Fun DVD set - it's a great way to discover the Hello Kitty world as it features not just Hello Kitty, but also her sister Mimmy and their friends; it's a collection of reworked fairytale and storybook classics such as Cinderella and Heidi, plus some Christmas themed original stories and adventures teaching a message of friendship, courage and helping others.
But aside from the obviously Christmas themed Hello Kitty products, there are also ranges of Hello Kitty clothing, jewelery and accessories, toys and games, books and school items, sports equipment, home ware and electronics - for just about any gift item you can think of, there is a Hello Kitty version available! And, as the brand has evolved and grown over the past thirty years, Hello Kitty now even has a retro-style cult status amongst women of all ages with appropriate merchandise for them too, such as grown-up diamond jewellery and adult clothing ranges. So it seems that Hello Kitty is not just for children at Christmas, but carries an appealing goodwill message for everyone all year round!

Hello Kitty Cupcake Recipes
Yum!
The Kitty cupcake toppers were made out of a homemade marshmallow fondant (very simple...marshmallows, confectioners sugar and water). Pink and yellow food color was used to make small batches of colored fondant. These were then used to make the bow and nose. The wiskers were drawn on with edible food color markers

Hello Kitty Cake

White Day is an Asian holiday, celebrated March 15th, during which males are supposed to reciprocate the gift that their partner gave them on Valentine's Day. The folks at Rakuten and Sanrio have one gift suggestion... a life-size Hello Kitty cake. (It's 8.25 inches tall, about the height of a real cat. Hello Kitty is five apples tall. The math seems close enough.)
The solid cake sells for ($122) and can be customized with messages for other occations as well.
