A Lens to Raise Funds for Operation Helmet

More Helmets for Operation Helmet looks at two more areas where helmets come in handy protecting people--when Rock Climbing and when Bicycling.

This lens is another lens created to benefit Operation Helmet as part of the Project Help Lensraiser.

Operation Helmet is a 100% volunteer, non-partisan, charitable organization. They currently provides needed helmet upgrade kits free of charge to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as to those ordered to deploy in the near future. These pad inserts are saving the lives of soldiers everyday.

My Connection with Helmets

I had forgotten that I had such a connection to "helmets" until I read Bonnie's Lens on "Helmets for Operation Helmet."

These earlier connections, buried in my subconscious, must have been part of the reason that I so readily got involved with the Project Help Lensraiser for Operation Helmet.

One of the connections resulted in a helmet possibly preventing a death, the other the lack of a helmet contributing to a death.

Bonnie's lens on Helmets for Operation Helmet was the inspiration for creating this lens looking at other situations where helmets come in handy.

My Connection with Rock Climbers and Helmets

My connection with Rock Climbers and Helmets was a positive one.

My boyfriend in High School and College was an avid Rock Climber and involved with Search and Rescue. On a routine climb he fell sustaining a concussion that required overnight hospitalization.

He probably would have died without his helmet.

Importance of Wearing Rock Climbing Helmets

Many climbing injuries could have been prevented or made less severe if the climber involved had been wearing a helmet.

Why the Need for Operation Helmet?

The Shock-absorbing pads keep the helmet from slapping the skull when hit with blast forces, fragments, or being tumbled along the ground or inside a vehicle.

This decreases the chance of brain injury from IED's, bombs, RPG's, vehicle accidents, falls, etc.

In other words, the Operation Helmet Upgrades protect the troops from traumatic brain injury.

More about Operation Helmet

OPERATION HELMET is a 100% volunteer, non-partisan, charitable organization headquartered in Montgomery, Texas (near Houston) with volunteer operations around the country.

Operation Helmet provides helmet upgrade kits free of charge to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as to those ordered to deploy in the near future.

These helmet upgrades do three primary things:
    1. Protection - Shock-absorbing pads keep the helmet from slapping the skull when hit with blast forces, fragments, or being tumbled along the ground or inside a vehicle. This decreases the chance of brain injury from IED's, bombs, RPG's, vehicle accidents, falls, etc.
    2. Comfort - If it is comfortable, it will stay on troop's head longer and more often.
    3. Stability - Keeps the helmet firmly on the head and out of the eyes.
IED - Improvised explosive device
RPG - Rocket Propelled Grenade Launcher

My Connection with Bicycling and Helmets

Unfortunately my Connection with Bicycling and Helmets isn't so happy. It is an example of what can happen if you aren't wearing a helmet.

My Finnish uncle died in the 1980's from head injuries that he sustained after swerving to miss hitting people while riding his bike.

He wasn't wearing a helmet.

Lance Armstrong on Helmets

The unfortunate thing is I hit my head which cracked my helmet in two. ... It wasn't that serious and nothing was wrong.

No breaks. No stitches; just road rash and a little beat up.
