Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that can hit children out of the blue, leaving them dependent on insulin shots and a regimented and restricted diet for their life times. It can and does lead to crippling complications such as kidney failure, blindness, amputations, nerve damage, heart attacks & strokes among others. In fact people with diabetes are 2 to 4 times more likely to suffer a stroke or heart attack. As well the life expectancy of the diabetes sufferer is on average 15 years shorter than the norm! My friends and myself try and raise money to fund research into this terrible affliction.

The annual TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes brings together people from all across Canada to help find a cure for diabetes. The TELUS Walk is an enjoyable way for families, friends and the corporate community to get involved and help make a difference in the lives of over 300,000 Canadians living with type 1 diabetes. Last year, the 2009 TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes brought together over 45,000 Canadians and raised in excess of $7.5 million dollars! Help us make a difference.

What Are The Symptoms Of Diabetes To Watch For?

Here are a list of things to watch for.

- increased thirst
-more frequent urination
-lack of energy and drowsiness
-an increase in appetite
-an unexplained and sudden loss of weight
-changes in vision
-fruity, sweet smelling breath
-difficulty in breathing

These symptoms can be difficult to spot in young children so you must pay attention to their complaints. And the symptoms can be signaling different maladies so please do insist on a blood/sugar test to be done. It is cheap and the only way to rule out diabetes.
