Help for Haiti: A Personal Plea

You've heard of the earthquake & devastation in Haiti. You're probably following the story in the news and paying attention to the humanitarian efforts going on, possibly even considering how you can offer help for Haiti. But it's hard to imagine what the Haitian people are actually going through . . . unless it's personal to you.

For my friend and colleague, Heidi, and her husband, Brady, it's personal. Too personal. Their baby is there.

Heidi & Brady are in the process of adopting a baby boy, named Trey Amos, from God's Littlest Angels Orphanage (GLA) in Haiti.

Here, you'll get to know a little bit about Trey Amos, Brady & Heidi, and the orphanage. And you'll have a chance to provide help for Haiti that will benefit Trey Amos and many other orphaned children in the devastated nation.

Addendum: Heidi & Brady now have Trey Amos home with them! But the needs of the orphanage presented here are still very real.

The Orphanage

This picture shows a bit of the orphanage.

It's kind of a haunting picture, since it shows something so very different from the pictures of chaos and destruction since the earthquake.

Heidi & Brady just came home from Haiti a few weeks ago. They went to meet their baby and spend time with him here, at GLA. Their adoption process has taken a year so far and they continue to await the news that they can finally bring their baby home to Canada. It was a precious time to be able to be with him in person.

Heidi & Brady were frantic when they heard the news of the earthquake, just weeks after they returned home. Thankfully, they were relieved to learn that GLA had been spared and that all the children are OK.

On January 12, the day of the earthquake, Heidi wrote on her blog:

"A huge 7.3 earthquake just hit off the coast of Haiti very close to Port-au-Prince and Petionville (where the orphanage is)! Apparently everyone at GLA is OK."

And . . .

"Apparently the babies are all sleeping outside tonight under the open sky. In Port-au-Prince people are scared to go back in buildings that are left standing. Some of the Haitian staff are hearing bad reports about their homes/families.

The presidential palace and hospital have collapsed. I hope the airport is still operational. They need to get aid in there ASAP! If the survivors don't have access to fresh water the death toll will multiply.

We just want to get on a plane and go get our little Trey Amos outta there! I'm so glad Dixie was able to post on the website right away that everyone was OK. Those first few moments after hearing about the quake were some of the scariest of my life! What a relief to hear that GLA was still standing."

Trey Amos

Look at Those Huge Brown Eyes!

Meet Trey Amos.

From Heidi's reports, it's evident that he's a sweet, delightful, loving, curious, bright-eyed little boy!

He just turned one and has already endured such hardship in his little life, from losing his parents, to going through this catastrophic earthquake.

He loves cuddles and his favorite toy is a stacking cup set, purchased by his grandparents.

He is so loved by his new family!

This is the family during Brady & Heidi's visit to Haiti last month.

How You Can Provide Help For Haiti

Specifically for Trey Amos & GLA

GLA cares for lots of orphaned children just like Trey Amos.

The kids range from birth to about age 7 and many of the babies at GLA are on oxygen, or in incubators. They may have been premature, malnourished or abandoned. A generator is needed to keep this medical equipment working, but it runs on fuel, and GLA is running out.

You can imagine what could happen without fuel and the generator . . .

Additionally, people who need help from the surrounding community are coming to the orphanage because of the medical supplies and medical staff there. Not only does the orphanage need to be able to care for the babies and children that are currently there, but they also need to help others, including more orphans as a result of the disaster.

Please consider donating to the Earthquake Relief Fund for God's Little Angels in Haiti. You can learn more, and donate, through GLA's main website as well.

I hope many more of these orphans have now been adopted and that with other disasters around the world, people will not forget Haiti and will continue to help. Featured lens on my disaster preparation lens.

There are indeed many stories, and many lenses on Haiti but when we know someone affected it changes things. I am glad your friends got their baby home, that the orphanage wasn't destroyed.and hopefully this will give people another way to help. *Blessed*

Very touching, just saw a piece on the news about such couples...story was about so many Haitian orphan children in need, but only those who had filed for adoption prior to the earthquake were being addressed. That was maybe 15 minutes ago I saw this, then saw this lens. Happy for them. Excellent lens, Leanne!
