If your case is simple, you might want to find the appropriate legal forms online and file them yourself. But if there is significant possible cash involved or if your case is complex, then you probably should hire an attorney. Finding a good lawyer is not always easy. Reading an ad or checking the yellow pages doesn't give you a lot of information to work with. If you have friends that have had legal issues, talk to them, especially if their legal problems were similar to yours. But don't make a decision based solely on their advice.

Submit your name to online lawyer matching programs and search through lawyer directories. Nolo, for example, states "Nolo (see links below) offers a unique lawyer directory that provides a comprehensive profile for each attorney with information that will help you select the right attorney. The profiles tell you about the lawyer's experience, education, and fees, and perhaps most importantly, the lawyer's general philosophy of practicing law. Nolo has confirmed that every listed attorney has a valid license and is in good standing with their bar association. Every attorney has taken a pledge to communicate regularly with you, provide an estimate of the time and cost involved, and provide you with a clear, fair, written agreement that spells out how they will handle your legal matter and how you will be charged."

LegalMatch (see links below) is another company that operates a lawyer/client matching service.

Ask your insurance agent, banker, accountant, local chamber of commerce, etc., for the names of the lawyers they use. That way you may be more likely to get a specialist rather than a general lawyer.

Make your decision whether or not to use a particular lawyer after you've met with him and discussed your case, not before. Don't be afraid to ask him about his past record working on similar cases. Get his contact information and ask him how long it typically takes him to respond to questions or concerns.
