Helping the homeless people...My dream

This is just a crazy dream I have to be able to help homeless people that really deserve a shot at a better life and I hope that one day I will be able to do what I have set out on this lens below.

Most of us don't stop to think...

Most of us are so caught up in our day to day lives that we don't stop to think how fortunate we are.

We ignore the homeless people, sometimes pretend that they are not there.

Why do some of us go on to become multi billionaires, and some of us become nothing? Doesn't that seem a little strange, or is it just how life deals the cards?

Living in South Africa I see it every day, there is so much poverty around, and I also tend to ignore it. It is pretty amazing though because so many of these people who have absolutely nothing, and not even a home sometimes, are so kind and generous, and there is no resentment towards people who do have a lot. I think in general they are better people and that is why I want to work hard and make a lot of money so I can help those who don't have much of a chance.

My plan...

It came to me this morning, as I was inspired by an article I read about homeless people.

So I started thinking...and this is what I came up with.

What if I buy a huge plot of land, maybe a couple hundred acres.
I'll start of small, maybe building a couple of hundred rooms with beds and basic amenities.
There would be communal shower facilities, and luxury things like a gym, a library with computer access, a movie cinema etc etc.

Homeless people would be interviewed to see if they would want to join the program and give their input and be willing to work hard.

In return, they would get a room and be guaranteed food, water and access to the facilities.

But it would be like a learning centre.
There would be shifts where people cook for the entire community, fruits and vegetables would be farmed and the land would be fully utilised. They would be trained by professionals.

They would take classes in information science and computers, martial arts, music.

There would be shifts for cleaning, and security.

The whole building and operation would be created as "green as possible" ie. self-sustaining.
Heated water would come from solar power, water from a bore-hole, electricity from wind, etc etc.

Kind of like a whole civilization and university where homeless people could go on to become great people who could improve the world even more, so by helping them, it gives them a chance to help the rest of the world even more.

Of course this would have to be worked out in detail.

The classes and education would be mixed with a communal workplace, some enterprise that would pay for the expenses of everyone living there.

There is the initial investment of the land and buildings, but for a few billionaires or multimillion dollar company this would be nothing.

The more I write about it, the more the plan seems to be to take homeless people off the street, offer them education and an oppertunity to become skilled people, all they have to do in return is be willing to work hard, be honest, give a full 110% input and eventually through their knoweledge be able to give back to the community, or the world, maybe combat pollution, or invent ways to improve the state of our planet!

What a great vision! I've always wanted to do something for the homeless but where to start?! I would love to start or be involved with a program like that. Always seems like money is the underlying issue and also...where do you start?? Hope it works out for you and keep posting on your progress with your dream!

These are all valid points but i have spent a bit of time with the homeless people in my area and sometimes giving them blankets and donating money to charities isnt enough. Primarily i think that they just want to be recognised as an equal person to everyone else- if they talk to you, then you should talk to them back. So many of them have a story to tell and even if you can't give them money most of the nice homeless people will appreciate it just as much.
Many of the homeless people know where the nearest homeless shelters are, but these shelters have limited room and if they are full up then they will not take anyone else. If you found out that there was no more space at the homeless shelter then what would you do? i know i would do exactly what most of them do which is go and buy alcohol to make a night on the streets a lot easier. This is when they start becoming dependant on alcohol. Therefore, the homeless that do drink on the streets are not necessarily the ones that are any less worthy of help than the ones that don't drink.
I read a very interesting book called 'stuart- a life lived backwards' a few months ago. This book claims that after a few weeks of being homeless a person will become 'hardened' to the streets and feel that they belong there because society is against them, and therefore a lot of help that people try to give is rejected by the homeless and a lot of them end up back on the streets even when they are given council housing.
Working out what people can do to help the homeless is a huge problem because it is such a huge problem and so needs a huge solution. It is good if people give money to charities that help the homeless and donate blankets, but they are not the only things that should be done.

great idea. I hope you are able to do it. My dream is eventually a cooperative of micro-enterprises for the homeless.

I shared your dream as one who was homeless once and nearly am again now. I'm struggling to try and make a living with online affiliates, as I have chronic pain unbearable at times, but not eligible for any assistance. I love animals and have compassion for people that want pets, but aren't allowed to have them where they live, like in my apartment. Although we have cats, I can't have a dog I need to have. I would love to build a large apartment complex for "People With Pets", with open space for dogs, etc. Isn't it strange that those of us without the money would like to help, while the rich hang on tightly to their money! Another I would LOVE to start is a shelter that accepts people with pets, as many are turned away if they have animals, even in a disaster or emergency. It is sad :-( Maybe someone could start a lens to get the word out to all those multi-billionaires?
