Traditionally, the 14th February has been a special day to exchange gifts between loved ones.
Named after St. Valentine (did you know that there are actually numerous early Christian martyrs named Valentine), no one can be certain which of these saints started the tradition, but it is commonly believed that it was St Valentine, a roman in 269 AD who gave up his life for refusing to give up his faith in Christianity.

Valentines Day Cards
One of the most common Valentine days traditions is to exchange love notes - called "Valentines". These started as hand-written notes,but have now been replaced by greeting cards.Valentines messages can be traced as far back as the 15th century in Europe. But are more commonly attributed to their revival and popularisation during the early 1800's in Britain. In America the Valentine Card became popular around the time of the Civil War (1861 - 1865).
In Britain, it is believed that the introduction of the postal service with the "penny post" helped increase the sending of Valentines Day Cards. This made it an inexpensive and fast activity. Prior to this, most Valentines would have been hand delivered.
Every year, some 1 billion Valentine cards are exchanged in the United States.
Antique Valentines Day Card
However, I somehow believe that Antique Valentines Day cards have an innocence and charm that is extremely appealing.
In early 1800's Britain, fancy Valentines were made with lace and ribbons. However, the end of the 1800's, Valentine Cards were being mass produced.
Early Victorian Valentines came in several different styles including:
Acrostic - valentines where the first lines of the verse spelled-out the loved one's name.
Pin-prick - valentines made by pricking tiny holes in paper with a pin, creating the appearance of lace.
Theorem - valentines were designs were painted through a stencil .
Today, such cards are increasingly collected and steadily rising in value.
In the United States, credit goes to Miss Esther Howland for sending the first valentine cards, with commercial valentine cards being introduced in the 1800's.
