Here's the essence of what I shared with my buddy Robb when he asked me "can you help me save my marriage?". These 3 ways to save a marriage are simple yet very effective methods. That being said, here they are:

Make the Decision to Save Your Marriage. No matter what the cause of the rift is and how rocky things are now, you can fix your relationship and win back love. And it all starts in your mind. I know it sounds corny, but it's true. If you believe it's possible to work through your problems and save your marriage, it's more likely that you will be able to do it. On the flip side, if you adopt a victim's mentality and think your marriage is "doomed", you don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that you that things probably won't work out. So make the decision that your relationship is worth saving and commit to it.

Be Willing to Communicate With Your Spouse. Effective communication is crucial to you saving your marriage and to the success of your union in the future. Being able to communicate provides both of you with an opportunity to discuss your concerns, desires, expectations and work out the problems you have. But in order for you to be effective in communicating, there must first be a willingness to do it. When you're dealing with marital conflict, there may be a tendency to clam up when you're hurt or when you're the one being blamed. But you need to drop this negative stuff and open up so you can repair your relationship.

Take Responsibility for Your Role In Your Marital Problems. This may be a hard pill to swallow especially if you see your spouse as the one with the problem. But the truth of the matter is you have played a part in the trouble you're experiencing. You and your spouse are in your marriage together, aren't you? Of course you are. And your actions and reactions to the issues in your marriage have played a role in the current state of your marriage. You need to take responsibility for your part if you want to save your marriage.

Did My Advice Help Robb and Brenda Save Their Marriage?

Even though Robb and his wife had some very serious issues to work through, my advice on how to save a marriage helped them both decide that their marriage was worth saving. It helped Robb open up to Brenda and to be honest with her about how he felt. They both agreed they should see a marriage counselor. So between their weekly sessions with their counselor and my talks with Robb (I made myself available whenever he wanted to talk), they were able to repair their marriage. And they're still together :-).
