Borrowed Time Equine Rescue
Our names are Cliff and Darcy and we welcome you to Borrowed Time Equine Rescue, our horse rescue and rehabilitation facility and thank you for stopping by. We moved to Fallon, Nevada, in June of 2007, after purchasing 20 acres of desert and a fixer upper home. Cliff is a Disabled Veteran and the VA Medical Center is just 60 miles from here in Reno. This is very convenient when visiting the doctor as often as we do. We love it here, the people are warm and friendly and our community is wonderful.
I was raised around horses and had the privilege of having a very special relationship with a horse named Apache until my late twenties. He was a gift from my Grandfather when I was twelve and he changed my life. Apache taught me loyalty, love and responsibility. Horses are magic. Our hope was to have a couple of horses one day.
That winter we rescued two horses from starvation to our present horse rescue ranch. As we cared for our thin and sickly charges Cliff realized that he felt better physically when he spent time with them. Being with those horses actually lessened the constant pain he is always in. He said if we could bottle this and sell it we would be wealthy.
It was these horses that led us to research horse rescues, livestock auctions and horse slaughter. Through many phone calls and emails we met a woman that facilitates for countless horse rescues all across the western states. If she could help a horse she would move a mountain to do so. We decided that we could help horses by acting as a lay over spot. Here they could rest, eat and relax while awaiting transport to either a rescue facility or their adoptive home.
Almost always there are the animals left behind after the rescues have picked through and taken what could be found homes for. There are horses that are too young, too lame, or too old to travel; and other horses that, for some reason or another, lost their place on that trailer to safety. These are the horses we have here.
Most of our animals have some form of disability, but we believe these perceived flaws only enhance their beauty and show true strength of spirit. The horse and human bond has been around for a long time and is known for its healing qualities. A horse does not judge, he accepts and is tolerant. Every horse has worth and deserves a second chance to spend their borrowed time enjoying the sun on their back, kind hands on their body, a soft word in their ear, and enough hay in their belly.
We believe similarly in regard to Disabled Veterans. Every person has value and something to give, or something to learn. The word "disability" may be applicable, but can never define who we are, the quality of the relationships we make, or what kind of a life we can create.
We feel that these horses came to us for a reason. Horses need a job and Veterans need a horse. We are helping horses so that the horses can help our Veterans. Our goal is to provide equine assisted therapy to Disabled Veterans and their families.
Sincerely,
Cliff & Darcy

Success Stories
Borrowed Time has been fortunate to be a part of the lives of some wonderful horses!
Mamma Mare Bear, Lover Boy Bear
"This is a mare and one month old foal that a good friend of ours, Shellie, saved out of the kill pen at the feed lot the end of last summer. Shellie did not want them to be loaded onto the death truck, so she brought them here to us. The mare is so ill from being thin, with a body score of one, and having an infected face wound that our Vet said that she would have been dead in a few hours if she did not receive care. We named her Mamma Mare Bear because she was such a good mother, still loving and gentle with her foal even though she was dying. The little colt was named Lover Boy Bear. As you can see he is just the cutest thing."
Update on Momma Mare Bear and Lover Boy Bear
"Today, she is happy and healthy. Momma Mare Bear has a strong spirit and a wonderful disposition. Lover Boy Bear is a big boy and quite a hand full at sixteen months old."
Jesse
Holly saved this Paint Gelding
This paint gelding was saved by our friend Holly last summer. Once she got him home she discovered he had a swollen hock and should only be used for a child or a very small person. He was brought here to see if we could find a home for him. He was very shy and did not like to be touched. We only had him for a couple of months and he met our Bethanne. Within the month Bethanne adopted this Paint gelding. Now, he is quiet and extremely gentle. Jesse the Paint horse is happy. He just needed his right person to find him and give him a loving home.
Shiloh
California Mustang
This mare is a California Mustang and she was also saved by our friend Shellie. Shellie believed that the mare was just too beautiful to be loaded onto the kill truck. She is unbroken and quite wild. I could hardly touch this mare and I tried and tried to make friends with her. Then she met our friend Bethanie and you could see the mare relax. Bethanie had her hands all over that horse. It is amazing when the horse meets their right person. Bethanie named this mare Shiloh.
Bethanie is a disabled Veteran and we honor her for her service to our beloved country. Jesse, Shiloh and Bethanie now live together in love, forever.
Black
Jimmy & Becky Taylor
Jimmy Taylor and his horse Black spend time together. Each of them benefits from their relationship. Jimmy says that being with Black brings him peace of mind. He feels calmer and happier and that he actually feels better physically after a visit with this big, black horse. Black the horse, now called Black Taylor, has a purpose and he knows it. After being with Jimmy he puffs around here with his head high and a new spring in his step.
Becky Taylor likes to spend time with Little Bit Quillan, one of our orphans. The first time Little Bit met Becky they formed a special bond. This bond was instrumental in the orphaned foal's physical and emotional recovery. Becky says, "The horses and the Veterans need to be taken care of. That's important."
Jimmy Taylor is a Disabled Veteran, we thank him for his service to our country. It is our privilege to know him.
Queenie
Thanks to Al for Helping with the Horses
When Al met this black mare there was an instant bond between them. Softly nickering, the mare moved quickly to close the distance between her self and Al and it has been this way ever since. The mare had made it out of the feed lot to safety but in the process she lost her name, we just called her Black Mare. Al gave the name Queenie to her and it fits her perfectly. Al and Queenie spend time together often. Al has MS and she says that being with Queenie and Strawberry makes her feel physically and emotionally stronger.
Al was also the first to be able to touch this traumatized colt named Strawberry. Al's kind hand and loving heart has helped heal him.
Al is one of our Veterans and we thank her for her service.
News
This is where we will keep you Up to Date on all the Horse News!
December 2009Jimmy Taylor, one of our disabled Veterans and his wife Becky has donated a Cushman to the rescue. We thank him for his generous gift.
We thank him for his service to our country. It is our privilege to know him

August 2009
My daughter Olivia and her friend, Cheyenne, horsing around with the horses. Once every summer we get to have Cheyenne for a few weeks. Cheyenne is a wonderful girl, she loves animals. We love it when she comes to visit.

July 2009
Our daughter Olivia having a great time dragging the property with our friend Mr. Tip's Harrow. She had such fun that we had to make her stop when it finally got dark at 9:30 at night. This went on for days.

June 2008
We are fostering a mare that adopted three foals for a rescue in California. This sweet mare was left at the feed lot when her three herd mates were loaded on to the kill truck. Even though she already had a foal of her own she took on the other babies that were left motherless. This is a very rare and we were lucky to have seen it.
Nursing four foals was hard the the mare so we supplemented with formula.

- Awesome lens by awesome people. I own two horses and board another 6. These guys need our help! I've just started a lens promoting a new petition to stop the legalization of horse slaughter for meat. These animals aren't food! They're a part of the family!

- I've never had the pleasure of having a horse myself, but I certainly remember wishing I could, especially when I was younger. Thanks for the work that you do to help save them from slaughter and help disabled vets at the same time. ~blessed

- The work you do, both for horses and disabled vets is so important and so special. Both groups are important to me - and too easily forgotten these days or so it seems. Blessed by a Squid Angel.
