What's the Fuss About?

So, just what is scrapbooking? Well, back in the early days, scrapbooking was a way to create a keepsake that included different scraps of your life: ephemera, memorabilia, photographs and journaling. According to Wikipedis, people have been scrapbooking ever since printed material became available to the average person. Some of the earliest and most famous American scrapbookers include Thomas Jefferson and Mark Twain.

Photographs where first scrapbooked with photomount corners on plain paper. I have a scrapbook of my grandmother's that has black and white photos on thick black cardstock. Many times these scrapbooks would contain notations of who was in a photo (if you're lucky, right?) or where and when it was taken. They also would often include some bits of memorabilia like newspaper clippings or letters. These sorts of family albums are such treasures to those of us who have one today. And that is why modern scrapbooking is so popular today--for tomorrow to discover what our lives where like today.

There was a transition phase from traditional scrapbooks to a more vibrant version (think "Screaming Primary Colors"). Your average scrapbooker from 1980-2000 would be likely to make a very plain layout with memorabilia and snapshots covering a large amount of time, not very different from those of yesteryear except for their love of color and patterned papers. But something happened in the last five years and the industry exploded with creativity!

Today, scrapbookers are closer to artists then they ever have been. Each page is an opportunity to express feeling through the use of lots of lots of products--flowers, paint, ribbon, metal embellishments. So much more then a simple photo and journaling will go into a typical layout. Each page is a work of art... and a bit of experiment, too.

Where can we draw out new ideas and inspiration? well, that's what this lens is all about! I've listed some of my favorite sources in the hopes that they will also inspire you. I hope you enjoy them! Thanks for stopping by!
