What are hemorrhoids?
Hemorrhoids, or piles as they are also known, are veins by the anus that swell due to increased pressure. As you will see, there are many different reasons why this happens. Hemorrhoids can be very painful and on many occasions people claim they are unbearable to live with. As a long time sufferer of piles I can tell you that this is absolutely true. If you are a current victim, hopefully this lens will shed some light on the problem you have and give you some alternatives for dealing with them.
What Causes Hemorrhoids
And what you can do about it!
As mentioned above, hemorrhoids are usually caused by an increase in pressure on the veins in the rectal and pelvic area. Blood will pool within these veins and cause them to bulge and swell. This bulging and swelling will lead to the pain and irritation hemorrhoid sufferers feel.Causes of Hemorrhoids:
1) Excessive straining while on the toilet can lead to hemorrhoids. By squeezing too hard you can pool the blood in the anal and pelvic veins and create a hemorrhoid. What is the remedy for this? Don't strain!
2) Sitting on the toilet too long can also create piles. When your body is in that position for a long period of time gravity forces the blood to be pooled in that region. The remedy for this one is to not sit for too long. A rule of thumb is that anyone sitting for over 5 minutes is taking too long. Hey guys, read the newspaper somewhere else!
3) Pregnancy is a major factor in the development of hemorrhoids. As the baby grows in size the mother's added weight has an enormous impact on the pressure to the anal area. Unfortunately, if you want to have a child there is no way around this one although you will see later on there are many fantastic remedies for hemorrhoids.
4) Every year that goes by makes you a stronger candidate for hemorrhoids. Don't you wish that would be the same for winning the lottery? The older a person gets the greater the odds of them getting hemorrhoids. Once again there is no fix for this situation!
5) If you are overweight or obese than you also have a great chance of having hemorrhoids at some point in your life. Being overweight in the abdomen and pelvic regions increase the chances of acquiring hemorrhoids greatly. In much the same breadth as pregnancy the added weight of obesity can create a hemorrhoid. Fortunately, there are many different programs out there where overweight people can get help in losing weight.
6) Excessive anal intercourse is a definite trigger for hemorrhoids. Studies have shown that there is a vast increase in cases of hemorrhoids for people who regularly take a part in anal intercourse.
7) A poor diet can create an environment where hemorrhoids reign supreme! Diets lacking fiber rich foods like fruits and vegetables make people susceptible to hemorrhoids. Eat those fruits and veggies like mama always told you to and you'll be in much better shape.
8) Tumors in the pelvic area can increase pressure on the veins and cause hemorrhoids. Unfortunately there isn't much you can do about this outside of visiting your doctor and using hemorrhoid remedies to relieve the symptoms.

Types of Hemorrhoids
Internal and External Hemorrhoids
Generally, doctors will group hemorrhoids into two different types, external and internal. External hemorrhoids generally are the ones that cause the most pain. They emerge form the lower end of the anus or below the dentate line. The dentate line is simply the point where the skin of the anus and the lining of the rectum meet. External hemorrhoids sufferers often have immense pain and itching. When a blood clot arises in the hemorrhoid, an external thrombosed hemorrhoid is born. This leads to a vast increase in swelling and pain. It increases the pain further when the person attempts to sit down or make a bowel movement. External thrombosed hemorrhoids can be very serious and will often require medical treatment.
An internal hemorrhoid forms above the dentate line or at the top of the anal canal. With internal hemorrhoids, it is uncommon for people to experience pain although it is possible on occasion to have severe pain. The symptoms associated with them are bleeding, discomfort, and fullness with a bowel movement.
A prolapsed internal hemorrhoid occurs when a hemorrhoid protrudes through the anus, usually during a bowel movement. When you go to the bathroom the stool pushes against the hemorrhoid upon exiting. This can cause bleeding and sometimes even pain. Generally, the hemorrhoid will retract into the anal canal or can be pushed back in. When it gets stuck outside the anus it is called incarceration of the hemorrhoid. This can require medical treatment as well.
