Henna - The Arabian Way To Beauty

The Deep Red Color of Henna

Traditional red henna designs (or just plain color) on the hands, feet, and in the hair has, throughout the centuries, been considered the height of beauty throughout the Arabian and Asia.

In Kuwait, traditionally, henna was used on the hair for conditioning purposes, and on the hands and feet for beauty.

The deep red, almost maroon color of cured henna and its aroma were considered extremely feminine, sexy and desirable, and still are!

Henna for Hands In Kuwait

Traditional Kuwaiti Henna DesignTraditionally, in Kuwait, ladies, both young and old, would put plain henna designs on their hands.

These designs would be just like this bedouin lady has on hers.

This design is called "duck" (in Arabic "butt" or "butta", and some call it "swan" or "wazza" because of the way it comes out.

Most ladies and young girls would always have henna on their hands and feet, some considering this a form of showing the femaleness or femininity of the person.

But henna would be particularly important for special occasions such as Eid (Islamic religious holidays), weddings, and the like, but the old way of doing the designs was still more primitive and didn't have intricate designs.

The most a person would have is a circle or some primitive dots.

Nowadays things have changed a great deal.

Read on for more about that!

The Most Amazing Yemeni Henna

Bag Of Henna

This is the henna that people here in Kuwait swear by.

This is usually mixed with a lot of strange things, including strongly brewed tea or coffee, hibiscus flowers, coconut oil (or any other kind, really, but natural), or just hot water... some people mix in lemon juice, too, or something called mahlabiyyah (which sets the henna's color).. (I will put that up below)...

Henna Fix

This is also known as "mahlabiyya".

Henna Fix Mahlabiyya

Add this to your henna mix or put it directly on the skin (not to be used with henna for hair, though)...

This helps the amazing red or maroon color come out.

Another Traditional Henna Design

Traditional Arabian Gulf Henna DesignThis circle design is another popular Kuwaiti design.

This is from the Arabian Gulf..in general... but Kuwaitis use the same style.

If you click on the picture it will take you directly to my own site: THE DESERT BOUTIQUE where you can buy some of the best henna in the world, along with some very cool henna stencils and a special oil that will help you to get the best henna designs ever!

New Henna Styles

UAE henna Nowadays ladies and young girls in Kuwait prefer fancier versions of their henna designs.

The more intricate the better, it seems.

Delicate designs for henna have been popular for hundreds of years in India and Sudan (among other places).

Then it moved to the United Arab Emirates....

And then Kuwait!!!!

Intricate Henna Designs for the Hands

Black Henna is a NO NO!

Bahraini Henna DesignsAlthough what people call "black henna" (which is absolutely NOT henna and is usually a hair dye) looks nice, it is really not good at all to use it.

It is highly toxic and, in fact, I have seen some seriously nasty allergic reactions to it!

I have personally never used it, and won't, because it's not worth the risk of harming myself with poison!

Besides... red henna is so gorgeous!

Henna on the Feet

Traditional Henna for the Feet In Kuwait it is also traditional to put henna on the feet.

In the past the henna was put on in a very simple way, to cover the soles, sides (to an inch or so below the ankle), and the ends of the toes.

These days henna designs for the feet are intricate and beautiful.

Check out the beautiful designs for the feet!

The design below is similar to what traditional Kuwaiti henna for the feet would look like (except a bit messier looking) :)

The daughter of a friend of mine...who is a friend herself:-)...did something like this for her wedding. She had a middle eastern type wedding, if I remember correctly, or was it something she learned in India? Anyway, she decorated her hands and feet as pictured and it was quite beautiful. *blessed*

I had a henna design done, I loved it so much that I opted for a tattoo of the design on my foot. Henna is a great way to adorn your body with beauty if you aren't ready to commit to permanent tattoo. This is a great lens, the photos are gorgeous and the information was great to read!

I was a hairstylist in my younger days and at what point we were putting henna on hair. People loved it, problem was if you used it too much it would build up on the hair. I love the intricate designs on the woman's hands, super lens. *Blessed
