Henri Fantin-Latour (French, 1836-1904)

Born full name Henri Jean Theodore Fantin-Latour in Grenoble, Rhône-Alpes, France, he studied art at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Fantin-Latour is best recognized for his still life paintings of flowers and group portraits of his Parisian artist friends and authors. His work is highly shaped the symbolist art movement of the later 19th Century.

Henri Jean Theodore Fantin-Latour was born in Grenoble and was taught by his father, a society portrait painter. As a young man, he enrolled at the Lecoq de Boisbaudran, then the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and later studied at the school of academic painter Charles Gabriel Gleyre. Several trips to England enabled the artist to meet members of the Pre-Raphaelite circle and establish friendships with other English painters, most notably Whistler.

Though his work did not cause an impact at the French Salons Fantin-Latour developed an audience for his classical still life paintings among English clients.

Henri Fantin-Latour was best known for his floras but also painted portraits of his contemporaries. His circle of friends included many of the Impressionist painters and he was greatly admired by members of the Symbolist and Aesthetic movements. Henri Fantin-Latour died in 1904.

Museums: Henri Fantin-Latour may be found at the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., the Manchester City Art Gallery, U.K., the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Quebec.
