That Famous Manhattan Skyline
New York Skylines Photographed by Henri Silberman
The New York Skyline is the most famous skyline in the world. This classic image has been captured by Henri Silberman in these day and night skyline images.
The Manhattan skyline by day shows the much-missed Twin Towers of the World Trade Center and is the view that you would see from the Staten Island Ferry at the tip of Manhattan.
The night New York skyline has been taken from another vantage point facing Midtown Manhattan to include the lights of the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building and (at the far right of the image) Citigroup Center.
This Manhattan skyline photo shows the Brooklyn Bridge, a favorite subject for Silberman. Beyond this beautiful bridge over the East River can be seen the buildings of Lower Manhattan and South Street Seaport. The tall building in the distance is the Woolworth Building. The Twin Towers are by now sadly absent from this New York skyline.
Remembering the Twin Towers at Ground Zero

Brooklyn Bridge -- A New York Landmark
The Big Apple's Favorite Bridge
New Yorkers love the Brooklyn Bridge and so do visitors to the city. But of all the bridge's admirers few can be as great as Henri Silberman, who gives the Brooklyn Bridge a starring role in many of his New York images. Someone who has clearly spent so many hours photographing this bridge as well as living close to it (he grew up in Brooklyn) cannot fail to have a special place in his heart for it.
Here we see a classic view of the Brooklyn Bridge from the pedestrian walkway with the bridge cables and their shadows forming a web. In the lower photo of Brooklyn Bridge Silberman shares an atmospheric moment as a lone pedestrian emerges from the fog.
Brooklyn Bridge at Night Photography
After Dark Images of Manhattan Skyline with Brooklyn Bridge
At night the beauty of New York's city skyline is even more striking. The lights of the skyscrapers are complemented by the lit-up outline of the Brookly Bridge.
Here Silberman lets us see once more the Manhattan skyline complete with the Twin Towers. This for many is the eternal New York that is still held dear in memory.
Verrazano Bridge, New York
Photographic Poster of Runner Beneath the Verrazano, NYC
The Verrazano is less well-known to many visitors to New York City than the Brooklyn Bridge. Named for the first European explorer to reach New York harbor, the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge was opened in 1964.
Perhaps the runner in this picture is practising for the New York Marathon. The bridge is after all the starting point for the famous New York City Marathon.
The Empire State Building
A New York Icon
It is fair to say that New York is a city of iconic images. It is a cityscape that presents both great challenges and great opportunities for a photographer.
Of all the icons, one of the most recognizable symbols of New York from the last century and the current one is the Empire State Building. Once more Manhattan's tallest skyscraper, the building has starred in movies and must be one of the most photographed buildings in the world.
Whether against a night sky with lights glowing in the darkness or as a majestic tower rising through the clouds, Henri Silberman has created some of the most evocative images of the Empire State Building.
The Empire State Building
was opened in 1930.
It is again the tallest skyscraper in New York.
Silberman Photographs the Chrysler Building
New York's Most Beautiful Building?
If the Empire State Building snatches the title of most famous and tallest building in New York, the Chrysler Building deserves the title of the city's most elegant building. The stunning Art Deco spire has a timeless appeal.
Silberman has photographed the Chrysler Building by day, evening and at night when its lit-up spire creates one of the most recognizable features of the Manhattan skyline.
Saint Patrick's Cathedral
is the largest cathedral in the USA
Flatiron Building, New York -- By Day and By Night
Day and Night Photography of the Flatiron Building in Manhattan
The Flatiron Building may not be as tall as its famous companions but as one of the earliest of New York's skyscrapers (it was the world's tallest building in 1903) it holds a special place in the heart of New Yorkers and tourists alike.
Its distinctive wedge shape and early 20th century charm make it a must for photographers. Silberman's photographs show the Flatiron both by day and by night with the lights of the traffic flowing around it like a river.
The Flatiron Building
has a triangular shape that creates winds. In the early 1900s men would linger for a glimpse of ladies' ankles!
New York Street Scenes
Famous Manhattan Roads, Avenues and Junctions
If someone were to ask you what you hear when you imagine the sounds of New York, chances are traffic would be among the sounds that come to mind!
Manhattan has some of the most well-known street names of any city in the world. From Broadway to Fifth Avenue, these roads put on a daily -- and nightly -- performance as they keep life flowing around New York City.
Henri Silberman has immortalized this carefully-managed chaos in his photographs of New York crossings and streets. Perhaps none more so than Times Square Crossing, the beating heart of Manhattan with its perpetual hubbub of vehicles and people.
What's in the Bond Street Billboard Image?
The Parks of New York City and New York State
Poet's Walk, Central Park and Prospect Park
Do you recognize this image of Central Park, New York's most famous park? Silberman has photographed here the Gothic Bridge which is located in the park up near 96th street, close to the tennis courts. Find another beautiful image of the Gothic Bridge taken by another photographer with a passion for New York, Jax Riley (who holds full copyright on the photo).
All four of the beautiful scenes of nature above were taken by Henri Silberman in Prospect Park. Prospect Park is located in Brooklyn and has 585 acres which include a lake, parkland, forest, and a zoo.
The enchanting tree photo features the Camperdown Elm which was planted in 1872 and has given inspiration to many artists and poets.
If you are not familiar with Poets' Walk Park it may be because this lovely landscape is not in New York City but is located in Red Hook, New York, which is to the north of Poughkeepsie.
Find out how to get to Poets' Walk and what you can do there on the Scenic Hudson website.
Central Park
is 2.5 miles long. It has 6 miles of drives and over 25,000 trees (source: Wikipedia).
Yellow Taxi Cabs
The New York Taxi
The yellow cab is another sight that is synonymous with New York City.
In this pair of vibrant posters of New York, the black and white background serves as a contrast for the yellow taxi cabs and the lights of Times Square in color photographs by Henri Silberman. This style of New York photography has become popular and you will see it in other images of New York too.
Henri Silberman Color Photography of New York
Just as Beautiful as Silberman's Black and White Photos
It's easy to see why the black and white photography of Henri Silberman has been so popular with its timeless elegance. However, though harder to find as mainstream posters and prints, Silberman's color photography is also magical.
This pre-9/11 New York Skyline at night features the Twin Towers and a beautifully-lit Brooklyn Bridge.

- A big fan of the photos. Does anyone know if the bridge shot in the "3 Views of Manhattan" shows the Twin Towers? For personal reasons I'd rather not see them on my wall each day....Thanks

- Hi Laura. I went and took a close look at both the 3 Views of Manhattan and the original Brooklyn Bridge photo (shown higher on the page) which it appears to feature. The full Brooklyn Bridge image shows the Twin Towers but the excerpt from it in 3 Views has cut the photo off just before them. So the short answer is no, the towers are not in the 3 Views.

- To be honest, I find towns with only skyscrapers horrible and never understood why humand feel the need to build such high towers and why they have to become higher and higher. I also couldn't live in a town like New York - I would feel suffocating in Megalopolis - but these pictures are really beautiful and I'd see no problem having one or two in the office. In addition, I find a little plus in black and white photos... Henri Silberman's a real artist who successfully turns a thing I don't like into a something I'd adore.
