Wouldn't you be happy too? The Red Wings locked up Henrik Zetterberg for the next 12 years. That means he will be in a Wings jersey until he's 40 years old if he wants to play that long. This is a good thing for the Wings as Zetterberg was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent next year. Term weren't released, but apparently both Zetterberg and Detroit's management advised that they were happy with the contract.Red Wings GM Ken Holland describes Zetterberg as "a leader, a guy who, when Nick Lidstrom retires, is certainly someone we'll have to consider as the next captain for the Red Wings." Think about that. Lidstrom retiring? Not soon most Wings fans hope, but the day is coming. Lidstrom's 38 (39 this April) and they'll need someone to fill his skates.
How's Zetterberg Doing This Year?
With his 17 Goals, 26 Assists for 43 Points in 45 Games, Zetterberg is 3rd in team scoring, trailing Pavel Datsyuk (56 points) and Marian Hossa (47 points).
The Red Wings currently trail only the San Jose Sharks in the Western Conference. San Jose has 75 points while the Red Wings have 69 points. The Boston Bruins also have 75 points, with the Red Wings sitting comfortably in 3rd place overall in the NHL.
