Meglio Stasera
(Henry Mancini & Franco Migliacci)

Meglio stasera, che domani o mai
Domani chi lo sa, quel che sara

Non mi dire d'aspettare
Il domani che verra
E una porta che tu chiudi
Fra me e te

Se stasera ti decidi
a rispondermi di si,
I domani che verrano
li dedico solo a te

Meglio stasera, che domani o mai
Domani chi lo sa, quel che sara

Nasce il giorno e il giorno muore,
e la notte portera
L'incertezza del domani,
chissa, chissa

Basta un desiderio solo
a non farti riposar,

e una pulce sul lenzuolo
che dormire non ti fa

Meglio stasera, che domani o mai
Domani chi lo sa, quel che sara.

It Had Better Be Tonight
(Henry Mancini & Johnny Mercer)

Meglio stasera, baby, go go go!
Or as we natives say, "Fa subito!"

If you're ever gonna kiss me
It had better be tonight
While the mandolins are playing
And stars are bright

If you've anything to tell me
It had better be tonight
Or somebody else may tell me
And whisper the words just right

Meglio stasera, baby, go go go!
Or as we natives say, "Fa subito!"

If you're ever gonna hold me
It had better be tonight
Or somebody else may hold me
They might make me feel just right

Meglio stasera, baby, go go go!
Or as we natives say, "Fa subito!"

For this poor Americano
Who knows little of your speech
Be a nice Italiana
And start to teach

Show me how in old Milano
Lovers hold each other oh, so tight
But I warn you sweet paisana,
That it had better be tonight.

Meglio stasera, baby, go go go!
Or as we natives say, "Fa subito!"

Meglio Stasera (known in English as It Had Better Be Tonight) is a 1963 song with music by Henry Mancini, Italian lyrics by Franco Migliacci and English lyrics by Johnny Mercer. It was composed for the 1963 film The Pink Panther. In the film, Fran Jeffries sings the song while slowly dancing around a fireplace at a ski lodge in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, where all the principal players of the film are gathered. In addition to the vocal performance, instrumental portions of the song appear in the film's underscore from time to time, sometimes as an intro into the main "Pink Panther Theme".

The song is a candombe, a genre of popular dance music from Montevideo, Uruguay, and the candombe's requisite drummers can be seen at one point in the film. The arrangement is highly reminiscent of "Tamboriles" (J. Mateo - G. Brum) or "Retirada de Asaltantes con Patente 1932" (Manuel Perez) as recorded by Romeo Gavilio.

The Pink Panther Series

Courtesy of Wikipedia

The Pink Panther is a series of comedy films featuring the bumbling French police detective Jacques Clouseau that began in 1963 with the release of the film of the same name. The role was originated by, and is most closely associated with, Peter Sellers. Most of the films were directed and co-written by Blake Edwards, with notable theme music composed by Henry Mancini.

Despite its use in the titles of most of the films of the series, the "Pink Panther" is not the Clouseau character, but a large and valuable fictitious diamond of the same name which is the "MacGuffin" of the first film in the series. The diamond is called the "Pink Panther" because the flaw at its center, when viewed closely, is said to resemble a leaping pink panther. The phrase reappears in the title of the fourth film, The Return of the Pink Panther, in which the theft of the diamond is again the center of the plot; that film also marked the return of Sellers to the role after a gap of ten years, which may have contributed to some confusion between the character and the diamond. The phrase has been used for all the subsequent films in the series, even when the jewel does not figure into the plot (the diamond has only appeared in six of the eleven films in the series).

The first film in the series had an animated opening sequence, created by DePatie-Freleng Enterprises and set to the theme music by Henry Mancini, which featured the Pink Panther character. This character, designed by Hawley Pratt, was subsequently the subject of its own series of animated cartoons ? as well as being featured in the opening of every movie in the Pink Panther film series except A Shot in the Dark and Inspector Clouseau.
