My Name is Henry and I'm Cute

This was written before Henry died on Friday, September 25th, 2009, at the age of 11 years and 4 months. He had a stroke and the veterinarian said that there was no chance for him and the kindest thing we could do was to allow her to put him to sleep. It was a terrible decision but the only one we could take as he was never going to regain consciousness. We miss him very much. He was a very sweet and loving dog.

My name is Henry and I'm a cavalier King Charles spaniel. I'm a small dog in size but I'm big inside. I'm sure I could be fierce if I really tried and frighten everybody but I have a nice nature. I live in England which I believe is in the UK - I'm not good at geography. I don't understand maps at all.

I am 11 years old and very cute. You can see I'm not lying about being cute by looking at my photograph. How much more cute can you get than that? I don't look my age, do I?

My two-legs think I'm stupid. They say things like "Henry's only got two brain cells. He was bred for cuteness not cleverness." Huh, what a nerve! How can they possibly say that when they can't tell when a dog has used a lamp post. I can tell just by sniffing it when it was to the nearest hour or less.

This is my biography, as I remember it, told in my own words.

My Earliest Memories

This is me aged about two, in the park. I've got a nice body and lovely tail, haven't I?

I can just about remember my Mummy and Daddy. They were the same colours as me but my Mother was bigger than my Daddy and I had lots of brothers and sisters. I don't know how many because I hadn't learned to count. We had our own den in the kitchen of a house with several two-legs there. Two of them were very tall and the others must have been young because they were smaller. I had lots of fun with my brothers and sisters interrupted by strange two-legs coming to see us.

They would pick us up and say,."It's so cute. Is it a boy or a girl?" They say dogs are stupid but we can tell the sex of anybody, no matter how many legs they have. One day, two of them came and picked me up and held me and stroked me. I enjoyed that very much. The female two-legs held me and stroked me the most.

Some days later, the same ones came back and carried me away from my Mummy and Daddy, brothers and sisters. We all got into a metal box that I know now is called a car. I was so frightened. I wanted my Mummy and I cried for her. Then a funny noise started and the box started to move. I was sitting on the female two-legs' knee and she tried to comfort me but I wanted to go back to my den. There were such strange smells in the box and I could smell another dog in there too although I couldn't see one.

This was the start of my new life.

My New Home and Adopted Sister

When we arrived at my new home, I found it was bigger than my old one with a big garden where I could run around although the two-legs didn't want me to run in some places with lots of bright flowers. I still don't see why they get so annoyed when I run through flowers but that's two-legs for you. They just aren't logical.

The big drawback to my new home was the other dog there. She wasn't friendly, growled and bared her teeth at me. The two-legs scolded her and when she did it again, they took her outside and shut the door on her - served her right.

I found out her name is Saffy and she's a springer spaniel. You can see her in the picture here. It's typical of her - always racing around, being silly and chasing balls and cats. She hated me. She kept telling me she was going to bite me very hard when she had the chance. Luckily, the two-legs didn't give her a chance to attack me. I don't like to criticise but she has no maternal instinct at all. You'd have thought she would want to protect a puppy but, oh no, she just wanted to bite me.

I wanted to be friends. I always want to be friends with everybody. I even like cats and some of my best friends have been cats. I've learned, though, that some dogs just aren't as nice as I am which is a shame. Just think how much nicer the world would be if we all wanted to like each other.

More about My New Life

The female two-legs was the alpha female in my new pack. Saffy didn't like this because she wanted to be alpha but the she-two-legs wouldn't let her. I knew the male two-legs was leader of the pack and I would never be leader myself. I don't mind, I wouldn't want the responsibility. If you're leader, you have to make decisions and fight to protect the pack. I still remember the stories my Mummy told me about pack leaders and how heroic they are.

She-Leader taught me that I must do my poops and wee in the garden and there was a small door inside the big two-legs' door for me and Saffy to use. (You can see a picture of part of the garden just above.) I quickly remembered to leave enough time to get outside because She-Leader would tell me I'm a good boy and give me lots of strokes and a chocolate drop. I love chocolate.

I ate my meals in a different room to Saffy because she would frighten me away from the dish and eat it herself if she got the chance. She wouldn't let me play with her toys either. I found an old ball she'd forgotten about in the garden and started playing with it. She came running over and jumped on me, growling. She really hurt me and knocked me over on my back and I cried and cried and cried. She-Leader ran over and picked me up and cuddled me. She shouted at Saffy and told her she was a very bad dog. That made me feel better but I carried on crying for a bit longer because I was enjoying the cuddle.

Leader liked me a lot. He kept picking me up and carrying me around. I heard She-Leader say, "Stop picking up that puppy, he can walk, he's got a leg on each corner." He didn't take any notice, I'm pleased to say. Saffy was very jealous.

My Scary Visit to the Vet

This is a recent photo of me. I look annoyed because She-Leader woke me up to take it.

I had a quick visit to the vet the day after I arrived in my new pack but she just looked at my eyes and ears and felt me all over. It was quite pleasant, really. The next time, though, was horrible. I wasn't allowed to walk anywhere and couldn't get on the floor in the vet's waiting room to say hallo to other animals which was a shame as I would have liked to make some friends.

Then we went in to see the vet and she was nice and stroked me and told me I was very sweet. Then she got hold of the scruff of my neck and stuck this big sharp needle in it. I was very shocked and screamed. It hurt me so much that I couldn't stop crying. Even when She-Leader was carrying me home, I was still crying. Did I get any sympathy? No, I didn't. She just called a wuss and a big girl's blouse. I could tell these weren't compliments from her tone of voice. I think she meant I was being cowardly but I'd like to see her getting a big needle stuck in her neck. I bet she'd cry too.

I had to go back a while later and have it done again but I was a bit braver and only cried for a little while. Soon after that I didn't get carried anymore when we went out. Instead she put this lead on my collar and wouldn't let me walk and run where I wanted when we were in the street. I was let off when we went alongside the river or to the park or on the beach - but that's another story.

Walking Alongside the River and in the Park

Our old den was very near a big river and most days we would go for a walk alongside which was lovely. I'd meet lots of other dogs, there were clumps of grass to sniff and trees and bushes. Best of all, there were so many different smells. It's when I learned properly to interpret messages from other dogs and how I learned to cock my leg so I could add my smell to lamp posts and trees.

As usual, Saffy had to show off. She couldn't just walk or run along the path. Oh no, she had to jump in the river and swim. She would get Leader or She-Leader to throw the ball in the river for her so she could swim out and get it. What a waste of time and energy. She really is a silly dog.

To show how crazy she is, one time we went to the river and it was horrible and cold. There was snow about six inches deep and the edge of the river water was frozen. Saffy jumped in and swam anyway. Leader and She-Leader shouted at her to come out but she just laughed at them and stayed in there for what seemed ages. When she came out she was shivering and we all had to run home. This wasn't fair as I had hardly had the chance to sniff anything nor meet any other dogs. So typical of Saffy, though - she's just selfish.

When we went to the park I invented my own game which annoyed her. She'd run like a crazy thing and I'd run and keep up with her and turn when she turned. She'd turn this way and that to get away from me but I'd do it too. It made She-Leader laugh and said we were doing formation running.

Visits to the Beach

Sometimes we get in the car and stay in there for quite a long time to get to the beach. Saffy and I know when we are getting close because the air smells different. Silly Saffy gets really excited but I stay calm because I'm sensible.

The first time we went to the beach, I wasn't very keen. The sand is nasty and gritty and gets in my fur. I don't like getting wet either. I was frightened by the big water which went on for ever. I never knew before we went to the beach that the world ended somewhere but it must do because we can't live in water so it can't be part of the world.

I don't like the way the water rears up in waves and tries to swallow more of the world. Luckily it keeps falling back again. Maybe one day it will succeed and invade the world. It's very scary.

Saffy isn't afraid of the water. She wants Leader and She-Leader to throw the ball in so she can show off by swimming out to get it and bring it back. The first time I went to the beach, I kept well away from the water in case it swallowed me. Now I don't mind going in and just wetting my paws a bit. In the picture above, I'm quite wet because I had my paws in the water and was looking at another dog on the beach and a wave came up behind me and tried to get me but luckily I escaped.

Now I don't turn my back on the water so I can get out the way. I mostly sniff around because there are some very unusual smells on the beach. I can usually find other friendly dogs to chat to so I'm never bored.

My Life Now

Saffy and I in the snow in February 2009. Saffy wants to go home but I want to sniff.

We moved from our big den with the garden in March 2008. Now we live in a smaller one and to get to it we have to go upstairs. I think we changed dens because She-Leader was ill but she's still alpha female.

We don't have a garden anymore either which is a shame. We get taken out more often, though. Usually we just cross a road to get to the Common where we are let off the lead. It's great because we always meet many dogs and lots of them are now my friends.

The picture above was taken on the Common after we had plenty of snow. Saffy didn't like it and wanted to go home. She kept taking shortcuts. I loved the snow even if it was a bit cold on my nose when I was sniffing.

Saffy doesn't run so much anymore because she's getting old so I have given up formation running. I don't mind because it gives me more time for my real interest - sniffing everything and scent marking.

We aren't proper friends but we get along OK most of the time. I've found out I can frighten her. Occasionally I'm given a bone and I growl all the time I'm chewing it. Saffy won't come near me when I do that which makes me laugh inside.

I have to say that two-legs are very odd. Whenever Saffy or I do a poop, the Leader or She-Leader comes along and puts it in a bag which they store in containers around the park or common. I've noticed other two-legs do the same thing and use the same containers to store their dogs' poop too. I have never found out what they do with it after that.

My life has been very comfortable and interesting so far. I'll come back and write more when anything interesting or exciting happens.

Reading this lens, knowing Henry recently died, made me really sad. My dog--Sassafrass Tea (Sassy)--is the same age as Henry was. I love her so much, I can't help but think about the day she'll leave us. I try not to have such thoughts and just enjoy every moment I can with her--and she's doing so well!--but I know the day will come. Having pets is the most wonderful thing and, because they have to leave us eventually, one of the hardest things ever. I'm glad you had Henry, though, and know he was very loved and loved you back.

You have a way with words Henry. Maybe you should write your autobiography and sell books. About that chocolate treat though, I thought dogs weren't supposed to eat chocolate. I heard it's not good for them. I had a lovely Old English Sheepdog, but she went over the rainbow bridge a little over a year ago and I miss her terribly.Take care.
